I was talking to a mate last weekend about Chinese bikes. He is the owner of a long established bike dealership and has had some contact with the things. Main bearings with a clearance fit are common The bikes are filled with "Preserving oil" that must be changed before running ( it does not say that on ebay). The worst I heard from him was about wiring harnesses made from short bits of wire soldered (or sometimes twisted) together, this is due to the work being outsourced to peasants working from home wishing to get the most from the wire they have to buy themselves.
His advice was do not buy but if you do first look at the switches, if they are good quality it is an indicator that the rest of the bike may be. His recommendation was AJS ( Chinese not British) as about the best of a bad lot.

I can't help thinking this maybe true.
However, I'm also thinking if the same was said about the Japanese bikes before they killed of the UK bike makers.
Wasn't the usual cry "It's Jap Crap"? - and not because it rhymes.

I believe that given a few years it'll be the Chinese / Korean makers that'll be edging out the mainstream Jap bikes (ok, I know the Japanese have deals with these makers - maybe they know something).

Maybe not the best of surveys but I know of two people looking at the Hyosung because they think they offer more for the money than mainstream makes.

Also if anyone has been watching the cricket world cup you'll see one of the sponsors is Hero Honda. It's an Indian company. Seems its most popular product is the CBZ. New model introduced, a 150cc 14hp (approx) machine. Apparently one of the fastest machines available in India. One of the few with a disc brake too Shocked Anyone fancy buying an Indian made bike (FWIW if I could afford the indulgence then an Enfield would be in my garage).

Thumbs Up

The Japanese never hit us with shit as the Chinese are doing. They came over and raced wierd machines on the TT like the six cylinder 125 with Mike Hailwood ridding and introduced leak free boring road bikes that went on forever. The Chinese give us cobbled together poo.

Chinese bikes are crap. I have one. Well had one. Written off today. Rust like anything. Just trying to wash it makes it prone to rusting. Problems with the gearbox, slow, side panels came off while riding for no reason.

STAY AWAY FROM CHINESE BIKES

I think the Royal Enfields are made in Indian, it's the way of the world I'm afraid, still at least the Triumphs are still made in Meridan..... Wink

Sad well, I am Chinese. But sadly I don't even trust the quality of Chinese bikes myself. The quality of Chinese car/bikes are sucks. And the thing even make the firm worse is - the endless 'copy and paste'. They never learn how to design a good car/bike by themselves. Evil or Very Mad

The funniest thing is when I was in China last time , I saw the new model of 'Chinese passat' from the Shanghai VW, which combined a 2006 model passat's front and a a6's tail. - exactly the same. Crying or Very sad

Just wondering if the Chinese firm can make some really good Chinese car/bike to let people like me feel pride. Confused

Hi, nice of you to post! I hope you're not taking offence at the comments on the board, they're solely directed to the bikes you produce and not Chinese people in general!

Welcome to the board,

No they're not, they're made down the road in Hinckley. The site of the Meriden factory is a housing estate.

And no-one's mentioned Ural's.

OH GOD chinses stuff.. i hate it.

they copy everything, even the crap stuff like virago's hahaa

jap stuff, yeah.... the koreans copy them, like kymco and hyosung (well they are suzuki) then the chinses copy the japs....and its crap, and then the chinese copy the koreans...... it abit like cloning or something, a copy of a copy of a copy..... just cant be good.

"oooh £300 for a new 4stroke 50 moped!!" yeah thats a 300 quid bike, you get what you pay for.

and the AJS name has been ruined.

royal enfields (rubber bullits) are indian... like the korean stuff... its not too bad but it could be better

dont worry guys, this fad of chinese shit will expire soon, all of these wont make through the first MOT, and that will be the end of them.

I read in one of the bike papers that people who have bought a Chinese bike after a short time of ownership are pretending that the bike has been stolen and claiming the insurance cash.

They are prepared to take the hits of increased insurance costs, loss of NCB, and the insurance company offering less in payout than they paid for the bike because the bikes are so rubbish. Shocked

Hi and welcome to BCF. I hope that I have not given the impression that I have some problem with the Chinese people, I do not, indeed I can sing the Chinese anthem (Arise!) in Mandarin after enough beer.
My problem is with bad engineering, how bad must the machines be fir the home market as we see the better ones in the UK?

In a few years time, the major players in the chinese automotive industry will improve their quality control and become major competitors internationally, while many of the smaller ones will fold up. We've seen it with the Japanese, and more recently with the Koreans. At the end of the day, the price of a product is perhaps the most important factor in ensuring it's success. Even BMW and Ducati, who traditionally price their products well above their competitors, are more in line with their competitors than ever before.
