My bike ('02 GPZ500S with 38k miles) just failed its MOT beacuse of "binding brakes". Now the brakes were fine, really good in fact and I only had to pull the lever back a bit to stop. It was like this since the bike was new.

Anyway, they have replaced the pistons and seals and installed new brake fluid. The bike passed its MOT

My brakes now feel really poor, you have to pull the lever back almost to the bar (you can just get a little finger in the space) to get anything to happen. Is this normal? I've had three GPZ's and none of them ever felt like this.

I took the bike back and demanded they fixed it, only to be told that in order to restore the brakes back to what they were I'd need new discs, sintered pads and braided hoses!!! Shocked

By fitting new seals and cleaning the pistons you may find that the old pads now have to travel further to come into contact with the discs, hence the increase in lever movement as the brakes are no longer 'binding'

Are the pads due for a change?

It does nt sound like a poorly bled system to me as the brakes would be pants to say the least

I turned the brake lever to position 1 and that helped a bit.

The monkey who did it told me the brakes would get better after a few weeks as the air works its way out of the system. Shocked

Never heard so much bull in all my life Laughing

Last time I'll be going to that garage!

From what I remember I used to have the brake and clutch lever on 3 Thinking

Just adjust as you see fit, I liked the clutch and brakes to bite quite close to the grips, had them adjusted when I had the brakes done and felt strange.

You'll get used to it Wink
