I was looking at borrowing a book to help me pass the bike test from the library and was surprised to see a copy of a book available at 'Wealstun Closed Prison'

14 Book The official DSA guide to riding : the essential skills / written and compil. - [5th ed.] Request this Item
Publication Date: 2005 Control Number: 0115526447

Wealstun Closed Prison 629.284 Adult non fiction Available

This made me think of the Great Escape film with Steve McQueen getting out of the POW camp on a bike.

I'm sure someone can better this pun.

I don't think he is in prison, I think he means he has found a book that has possibly been written in prison.

I'm not in prison (nor have ever been). I was pointing out that whilst I was looking for a library book related to riding, I had seen a book available at a prison.

I find the idea that someone could make use of this book in prison amazing.

They encourage the little fellas to read anything that might aid their return to civil society, and reduce the chances of them re-offending.

What niggles me is that someone who can't afford to buy the riding book could do with it more than a prisoner.

What niggles me is that the hypothetical someone isn't smart enough to get his arse down to the library and look the book up there, while the prisoner is.

Also, one assumes that the someone in question is planning to buy a bike at some point - one would further assume that if they can't afford to buy a book, they are going to struggle to buy even the cheapest of hacks.

Okay, perhaps my use of the words that someone who can't afford to buy the riding book , was poor judgement. However, I would rather the book in question was available to the general public where it is of practical use and not to a person in prison who has no access to a bike.

Surely books that would help offenders obtain jobs on release should be readily available?

It may well be accessible to the public , many libraries run a biblio exchange system , ie if you can't
find the book on the shelves they will contact another library and borrow that book for a nominal fee
usually postage costs.

Bury area has a free exchange system, for those who don't want to travel for libraries in the grt Manchester
area

Universities also run such a system, Manchester libraries are open to all N West university libraries,
it wasn't free though and in my university days before this funky labour saving journal searching
system which I forget the name of, I used to get loads of books from other universities.

for big ass books which are uneconomical to transport they'll scan if for you for 50p a page.

So that just cus that book is inside a prison (how the hell did you find it anyway?) , doesn't mean
you can't borrow it.

Thanks for the comments guys. It was never my intention to wind up anyone. TBH, I expected some puns.

They are. No reason why the cons shouldn't read something they'd like to, rather than something that they need to. For a start, happy cons mean less injured officers. We don't want Resurrection getting 'potted' now, do we?

Rumour has it that the 2 riots at my place were caused by one of my officers attempting to confiscate a '98 R1 poster from a detainee......
