Christ what an inspiration showing the grit, resolve and determination of the British Commandos during WW2. Clarkson presented it superbly with insightfulness and the respect the men deserved!
I cant wait to start my Marine training! Well done BBC2 Thumbs Up

I'll have to catch a repeat.
No disrespect to todays Marines but even given the advances in equipment and training IMO (from what I've read and been told 1st hand) they're not a patch on the original WWII British Commandos.

Do a little research and you'll see what I mean Thumbs Up Very Happy

i watched this, and i have to say it was an incredible watch. It was factual, full of emotion, first hand experiences as well as good quality video animations of what it possibly looked like.

I found that 1/3 of people returned, i thought this was a very high number, if you compare that to the fronts, and other 'major' battles, i feel that this was an amazing return.

Right at the end, when one of the veterans stated that "the youth of today would do the same", i don't think they would.

I'd have to sort of semi agree on that one i'd say they are a silent minority that would. The type that are constantly overlooked in the news who are busy making something of their lives, in fact pretty much like those and todays heros are now. As opposed to the stabbing, shooting, raping, abusing, not going to school, bullying (the list is endless) sort....fuck me its really rather depressing isnt it Shocked

Just to clarify, by British I meant all the WWII commandos trained in the UK (ok, Scotland). Especially the Norwegians who fought to free their homeland. People like Martin Linge are real heroes, so different from the 'hero' tag put onto footballers and the like today.

For more info on WWII commandos click here and here.
Fairbairn's unarmed techniques are also a good read - click here - and still valid.

FWIW whenever I'm on the bike north of the border I do try and stop off at the commando memorial north of Fort William. Maybe a bit sentimental but it's a way of saying thank you.

Thumbs Up

Fantastic program. I was particular impressed that a handful of commandos did actually make it to the Spanish border.

I don't think that today's RM commandos are any less effective, brave or heroic than the WW2 posse.

While the nature of war has changed somewhat, and moved away from the set-piece battles typified by Operation Chariot, I believe that todays marines approach their duties with the same bravery and dedication we expected of our elite infantry 60 years ago.

Look at incidents such as the nutters strapping themselves to an Apache's wings to rescue a wounded (eventually dead) friend. That's as stirring as anything I can recall having read about WW2. One also has to remember that much of our media seems to do it's best to avoid publishing anything that shows our troops in a positive light.

I agree with MJ. The Paras and RM returning from the frontin Afghanistan have endured conditions not unsimilar to other brutual wars. Read up on the falklands as well, the grit, determination and professionalism on display was profound.
