Whats the treatment stuff you can put in fuel to help bikes run in winter and stuff?

My uncles scooter is having problems starting in the morning so I'm gonna go round there and see what I can do with it and thought some of that petrol treatment stuff would help.

Ta Thumbs Up

Redex is the stuff but everyone on here says it doesn't work. Personally I have had no experience with it.

I thought redex was stuff to clean the fuel system, I thought there was some stuff that improves the combustibility of fuel for cold/damp conditions.

When was the last time it was serviced? There is more likely to be an underlying problem that needs sorting than masking it with fuel additive.

As far as I'm aware, Petrol will quite happily ignite in cold/damp conditions.

As Finglonga said, you'd be better off checking the state of the air filter, spark plug (check for a good strong spark), check the choke mechanism is working normally.

Probably the most common one at this time of year, would be to give the battery a good charge up, as they take a hammering at this time of year. What kind of usage is the bike getting?

I can't remember if you've got an Optimate style device, if not pop over your welcome to borrow mine.

Well the bikes just had a pretty big service (the service cost £20 less than the bike is worth!!) so I dont think its that. I'm worried it might be loosing compression but I want to rule out everything else (cheap) before looking at striping the head down. I'm sure the service looked at the head but I cant be sure. We have doubts about how good this garage actually is...

(They quoted my uncle £130 for a service, then did the service and told him it would cost £280 cuz they had to weld the exhaust and do some other stuff, however they didnt call him before doing it to ask, they just did it leaving him paying twice what he expect to pay right on christmas)

I'm gonna have a look at it tonight, check the plug and air filter and see what I can do, give it a blast of damp start, that sort of thing. Wanted to try this fuel additive stuff too incase that helps. Maybe try get some from Halfords on the way to his.

I dunno if the battery is 6v or 12v. Does your optimate do both? If so borrowing it would be much appreciated however I dunno when I could come over to get it, might have to be the weekend.

Can you get a multimeter onto the battery and check to see if its knackered? If so what sort of reading would suggest its shagged.

Think you might be looking for Silkolene Pro FST. Don't think it will help with the morning start though.

Ah ha yea thats the sort of stuff I'm looking for Very Happy

Cheers, I'll check the air filter, plug + battery etc before and then if that stuff dont hmmm not sure what else it could be other than loss of compression or dodgy fuel Confused

You(your uncle) was under no obligation to pay if they carried out work without your permission and they did not contact you before they did it.

What was the "other work" and are you sure it hasn't effected how the bike runs.

I'm not 100% what work was carried out, I'd have to ask my uncle. The bike was working after although he had to take it back as it didnt always start in the mornings. They cleaned the carb and tried to charge him £55, he refused to pay and took the bike back Laughing

I started the bike last night, had to play with the throttle a bit before it finally caught but it ran ok. I think its just the cold to be honest. He might get some kind of battery charger as it could be that.

So based on them doing that extra work and not getting his permission, would he be able to get that money back any way (small claims court or something)?
