Yeah, really... i wouldn't worry about it at all... i started taking people on the back as soon as I passed, takes about 30 seconds to get used to, and after that it's plain sailing.

Bendy is right.

The only real problems you can encounter when taking someone on the back is when they are obviously a fair bit larger (in height and weight) than yourself.

cheers for the swift replies, i probably take her weight in books every day in the panniers.

it's just the fact that on my own, it's only my skin if i put the bike down, i'd hate to give her a gift of road rash or worse. should be cool.

cheers\

Just make sure you give her all the usual advice so she doesnt do anything daft, other than that, you'll be fine.

My advice would be NOT if she's had a few drinks.
Her twitching around or simple merry fooling around could make this your last post, wait until she's sober.

Cant you just say "Really though, dont arse around when we're riding, dying would put a serious downer on the delightful evening we're having..."

Depends how sensible/pissed she is, i suppose.

I have a que of people that are wanting to go on the back from work.
Problem is tho im 5'10 11 stone.
These are slightly shorter but aroun d 12-14 stone. My OH is 6'1 and 13 stone Shocked Will I notice a difference in a big way?
Cornering maybe, roundabouts have me concerned.

I took my other half out after 6 months of getting used to the bike.
He is just over 6 foot, around 12 stone and looks over my helmet!!!
Must look funny, the two of us on the Hornet, but i didnt really notice him.
The main thing was the braking, it didnt want to stop as well!!! understandable i know!

Go for it, just take it easy until your happy

The following is not a brag but a past idiotic thing I did:

My first ever time on a motorbike was in Thailand. I took a pillion on a tour of one of the islands after I'd be riding for approx 15 mins and I managed to cope fine. It was great fun, apart from the wheelie dumping the pillion on her arse.... But thats a different story.

I imagine anyone with a bit of real experiance would be able to handle a sensible sized pillion without too much trouble at all.

You'll notice, but you can still do it. I've had some proper fat bastards on the back of my bike and it's really only an issue at low speed - you just need to be really smooth and think about what you're doing when you're stopping. No jerking to a halt, cos all that weight up and behind will feel like you're going over - smooth and gentle stops are the order of the day.

For a whole 2 weeks or so I was stuck with no transport and my only way of getting to work was on the back of my bro's sv650. I'm prolly 3-4 stone heavier than him, but neither of us really thought about this. First morning he got on and rode it to the top of the drive, I jamp on the back and the bike went over Laughing
We eventually both got the hang of it but I found it very uncomfartable, espicially since I was used to being in control on my own. Also the grabrail is no use fo fat stumpy hands like mine.

TBH felt like a bit of a pillock walking into work in full bike gear but no bike Laughing

I've never taken my bike into work? Do you park it next to your desk?? Or they happy with leaving them in the cloakroom??

Shall we start a book on how many times she headbutts him?

Headbutt every time he changes gear...ODDS-ON
Just on gear changes for the first 15 minutes...2-1
Just on gear changes for the first 10 minutes...3-1

No headbutting whatsoever 1,000,000-1

well, i forgot she was on the back at one point, the wieght issue ( her substantial lack of it that is ) did'nt come into it at all, and she had her arms wrapped around me, so leaning into corners was just like wearing a giggling backpack.

I'd say she headbutted me about five times, but i kept my gear changes mellow and smooth, the buttin happened mainly under braking. And she had a BIG smile on her face when she got off ( something about the vibrations at 7K revs? ) Still, i didnt open the throttle fully, still not totally trusting myself with someone elses life.

she now wants a bike

and she demanded i picked her up from uni today

i may have created a monster!

cheers

oh dear ! a monster has been born, by the sounds of it.

my missus was the same. i just had to take my time until she got used to the sensation of being on a bike. i had to tell her to trust me with regards to controlling the weight and leaning over and stuff.
now she can't get enough of the bike, always wants to know when we're next out. and she is a really good pillion, don't know she is there most of the time. have to keep looking over my shoulder when we stop, to check that she is ok.

it was worth taking my time when she first went on the back, an excellent pillion now. Thumbs Up
