At the weekend, I took my new bike (1997 Suzuki GSXF) out on a ride from Gloucester to Abergavenny with one of my mates on his Honda Firestorm.
All went fine on the way there, good roads, nice weather and not much traffic. So we arrived at the bus station in Abergavenny, had a coffee and a sandwich and a quick look at some of the other bikes which were there, then set off back to Gloucester, and because time was running out, decided to take the main roads.
All went ok until I was on the A40 going up a hill in the outside lane when I suddenly lost power. Shocked I saw a small turning off, so indicated moved over, braked hard and pulled into the side turning. Unfortunately the side turning was covered in gravel, and as I was still braking, the back wheel locked and started going sideways. Shocked I let go off the brake and coasted to a stop, and as I stopped the engine cut out. Keith who was ahead of me had not noticed that I had stopped and had carried on. Sad
I then looked at the fuel gauge, and it was on the top of red, so I thought I would try it on reserve, so I turned the switch, and the fuel gauge suddenly dropped to the bottom of red !
The bike then started and I was able to travel the ¾ mile up the road to the petrol station, where I met up with Keith and filled up with fuel. Smile
Moral of the story- don’t get on a dual carriageway when you have not checked how much petrol you have. (also know where the reserve switch is, and how to turn it whilst riding) Embarassed

I also thought that the gauge would go down to the bottom of red before I needed to switch to reserve- should have read the manual Very Happy

Its a good plan to set your trip meter to zero everytime you fill up as a secondary reminder of when you need to think of filling up (about every 100 miles most bikes).
You can also us this to keep an eye on fuel consumption if you fill completely each time.
Sometimes an increase fuel used can indicate other probs such as plugs or airfilter need changing.

i was on fastlane of the motorway and just shot past a lorry when the bike ran out of fuel, luckily there wasnt much traffic on the road so managed to coast to the hard shoulder as i cant turn the reserve tank on whilst riding (bet the lorry driver thought i was a right nob... hehe)

Thats why I like my 125, it has a petrol gauge on it. With the Gixxer its just a bit of guess work.
