What do you think would be the best way to stop a bike thief with out damaging the bike?

I don't mean stop them steeling it in the first place, i mean if you saw them riding it.

I only ask as i saw a kid riding a obviously stolen bike badly! He had no lid on, riding along the wrong side of the road and jumping red lights. I was at work at the time and my first thought was 'thieving little cnut' then i thought i would knock him off as he came past, i decided agains't that as I guess a 12ton bus would cause quite a mess!

But then i thought if i do that not only will i have to bend over and take one for the team when i comes to justice, i would also damage this poor persons bike.

In the end i just reported it via the radio which would probably only get as far as the radio operators bin but i had to do something.

Any ideas?

Knock him off and hope the fairing lands on top of his head?
Won't take much to wash out the redness, but I guess cracked scull might scratch, so I'm not sure Cool

I found scaring the crap out of them and making them stack it on their own was quite effective and they don't seem to do hideous amounts of damage to the bike they stole either try n head them towards grass all the better Very Happy

You could possibly try and cause him to come to a stop without endagering anyones life, then walk up to the bike grab him, flick the side stand on and pull him of by his hair Thumbs Up and not the stuff up top Twisted Evil

Just kick the twat off, preferably near a lamp post, wouldn't worry about the bike as he has probably ragged it to death anyway. just as long as the thief has broken bones to remind him not to do silly things again.

A pillow cannon. Fire a load of pillows into the road in front of the bike, then fire a barrage at the rider. The bike will come safely to rest on the pile of pillows.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
