Hello guys

Ive really taken a fancy to the HONDA FMX 650cc from my local honda dealer ship for £3995 he said if i traded in my honda xr 125 aswell they do the bike FMX for £2995 so thats a Grand off....

Ive been riding bikes for bout 7months now and im planning to get a bigger bike in bout 5months or so.... im under 21 so ive got to take the A2 test retricted to 33BHP do you think it be ok ?

he said i can pay monthly which im going to have to its gonna be about £120 a month he said thats over a 2 year period.

will my insurance go sky high? im 18 now and my insurance on the cruddy 125 is £900 and had no claims w00t lol

Cheers guys

Give that a go. It should be cheaper than you think.

Shocked £900 on a 125? did you just take the first quote you were offered?
i know the reasoning for this is that it's a motoX style bike so you're at risk of chancing it at green laning, but that price is incredibly high.
doubt you current insurer will take you on with it.
get the idea of the bike you want, then ring around insurers to see if they're prohibitively expensive.

Insurance should be fine. My sv is costing me £350 and I'm 18.

The FMX is soft as shite, and will make a great first bike after the 125 stage.

Put your details into https://www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk ... You should get a much cheaper quote than that..Unless you've claimed at all.

Depends on your definition of heavy. It's not particularly outright heavy for a 650cc bike. But if you think that weight has to be hauled around by 37hp then it seems a lot.

The Suzuki DRZ-400 sm is a lighter, harder edged bike whilst retaining reasonable usability and is easily restricted if you want to (it also produces more power than the FMX)

Also, if you are struggling with insurance, steer clear of new bikes and also steer clear of finance. It's unlikely you'll be able to afford fully comp insurance so you'll not have the security if you chuck it down the road. Which in turn means you could be paying for years for a bike you've written off. You are better off with an older machine.

Wooah, if you ain't done your test, do THAT first then reasses your options.

Shocked

There's a whole host of cool bikes that you can get after selling your XR for only a bit more and probably far more capable than the FMX. The DR400 is one such example. Even a honda XR400 or XR650 will be better than the FMX, which is effectively a tarted up honda dominator, same engine.

Even an old clapper such as a KLX650 will still be a good fun bike. I rode Smotobob's back to back with my XR125 and it was rate torquey. If you bin it, you won't feel as gutted.

Do you by any chance live in london, cos even then, my insurance was only 500 TPO for the XR125. (TPFT being 850 with 0 NCB at 17)

Engine isnt even tarted up, its restricted even more with the shite exhaust cans.

I wouldnt buy an FMX650 unless you had some money for a full system, and thats coming from a FMX650 owner.

Its a great bike and will teach you alot, however you will soon get used to the power and want something with a bit more oomph.

Saying that its been good for me, I rode mine for a few months with the restictors, whipped them out and then rode a few more months. Im now at the stage of wanting a full system with all the bits and bobs, just to release some more horses.

People slag it off alot on here, I can see why, but its an old and proven engine that wont let you down, shit ive come off my bike twice now and it still looks good, and ive never once had an issue with it.

And my previous bike was an XR125, so your in exactly the same boat as me. I would try the DRZ out also, but meh, if you want reliability.. Laughing

Im whipping some pics up of my FMX650 once I get all my bits fitted to it, so keep a look out on the pictures forum mate.

Seriously, i had nsr 125, just turned 17. Cost me nearly 300 for the year, i think it was fire and theif. You can knock them down so much, if you don't ask you won't get!

Whats wrong with the honda dominator? Always had a great reputation for being a great fun bike Razz I'd look at the xtz660 myself.

It's big, slow and heavy?
Doesn't have to be a bad thing and doesn't stop you having fun, but people may have more fun on a lighter bike.
I definitely wouldn't choose something like the XTZ which weighs more than most sports bikes when there's lighter examples out there with similar power.

Ok, in a lot of cases people won't really notice the weight with average road riding.

Oh and I suspect he may have been considering the XR650R, which is a fair bit different to the L model.

Oh and has anyone noticed the date of the original posts Smile.
