I just won an Ebay auction and after I won the item, I got VAT charged on the winning total and p&p.

Does this seem normal? I've been reading around, and the Ebay pages say:

Quote:
5. As a buyer, does this mean I have to pay VAT on my eBay purchases?
All goods and services traded between sellers and buyers on the eBay are not affected by these changes. Sellers remain responsible for paying the appropriate taxes on their eBay sales and purchases, just as they do for any offline transactions. We encourage all sellers to consult with their tax advisors to make sure they follow all applicable laws.

So can I be charged VAT on top of the winning total? This guy has loads of neutral feedback complaining about the sneaky VAT charges, but overall he is 99.9% positive. The VAT was mentioned on the page, but quite discretely and I go onto the page with only a few seconds left so bidded quite hastily.

It looks like he has to pay the vat, but people scared of negative feedback give nim neutral. Tell him to piss off, report him to ebay and give him a negative.

Well reading around a bit more it would seem they can charge VAT afterwards.

What a con! They have the option of taking VAT out of the selling price or adding on afterwards. Of course most sellers will add it on afterwards otherwise they lose 17.5%.

It just means that nothing you buy on Ebay is quite as cheap as you think it is going to be (if you're buying from a UK VAT-registered company).
