How safe is this?
Anyone any experience?
My OH is due to work in Basrah (sp?) for a 6 month stint (I.T. work for the armed forces)
It was always on the cards, he has wanted to do it for ages
I agreed at first..blah blah, now it is all coming to fruition
Security checks, a course away to teach him how to make detonators and bombs, forms to fill out, this and that, and today he passed his strict medical (that I thought he would fail )
So, he could be out there in the next 4-8 weeks
He keeps saying he will be safe, is on a secure base etc etc, but the thought is starting to scare me a tad!
They won't even let them set foot on the plane out there without body armour on!!
I can't stop him though. He wants to do it, really wants to, so it's up to him at the end of the day.

My dad is going over in may for a second time this time surveilance with the sas. He is using those remote controlled planes and brought a camera lens home the other day that is like the size of my leg.
He went last time and wasn't really on patrol but its not really that dangerous, so he said. Anyway look at the statistics. Said all the iraq police/army/general people are theiving scum though. |

Jodie, think on it this way:
My missus worries about getting on the Tube every day because she might be blown up. I'm serious, this is a genuine worry of hers.
Of course, how likely is it really? How many bombs have there been? How many people travel by tube every day?
Now apply this to your other halfs situation. If a contractor died in Iraq it would make front page news. I've never heard of a civilian contractor from an MOD base get harmed in Iraq. Sure, if you're a squaddie, or if you're a journalist or something out in the cuds maybe.
Basra is held by the British. Most of the insurgents seem to congregate around Baghdad (around the american occupied zone) which is much much further north.
Not only is it highly unlikely that anything will happen to him, the government can't afford anything to happen to him.
See, When I read your post, I don't see "Non voluntary posting in iraq" I see "Hubby wants to go because its something he has to do." Its a great thing to look back on in a kind of james bond rose tinted light, and he will be in no real danger. He'll probably be getting extra money and won't spend anything while he's out there.
Sounds like a dream ticket to me! ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Hi mate,
I've been out there twice, both times working from Basrah Palace whilst doing Helicopter op's. Obviously a lot will depend on where he is staying and where he is working?
Whilst not trying to scare you I would be fibbing if I said it was like a Club 18-30 holiday in Ibiza so I'll try and tell it how it is! Our camp on a good day would get mortared around twice a day, on a bad day around seven or eight times. The camp itself is set in another camp, see below diagram.
https://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i165/martin4356/CAMP.jpg
The inner perimeter is patrolled 24/7 and the outer perimeter is also patrolled 24/7. If he has to travel by road a fair bit, he'll be at more risk of roadside bombs or suicide bombers, travelling by air is far safer and is the best method.
He'll have a blast out there, I loved it both times and would definately go again!

Hey Jodie,
I've got a bit more time tonight so I thought I would reply again
I've just got a few questions though as if I was your other half, I'd be mega concerned

You say he is doing IT work for the forces, why on earth is he being taught how to make detonators and bombs? I've been out twice and I'm in the RAF, I was never taught that and I'm quite concerned that your other half (a civvie) is being taught it? I would have serious words with him, maybe hes just pulling your leg? Either that or you've got confused and hes working for Al Quaeda

Body armour is an every day part of life out there. It will become like a second skin to him! He wont have to don it until hes arriving in theatre and from there on in he'll have to wear it at all times or have it by his side. ____________________ Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and preserved piece, but to slide across the line broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out, leaking oil, shouting GERONIMO!!!

Ah okay, I get it. I was also taught all that stuff. They dont teach you how to make them or disarm them, its more of a what to look out for and spotting a bomb or suspected bomb.
My brother is an ex-RAF armourer and he learned all about bombs and disarming them. His training for it took the best part of nearly three years in total.
Good luck to him, he'll be fine! ____________________ Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and preserved piece, but to slide across the line broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out, leaking oil, shouting GERONIMO!!!
