Need some whizz like Keith to reply to this lol

Ok as you know I had a problem with oil, now it is sorted but I had the rattling noise. I was coming home then all of a sudden the engine died. Now it won't start, but I get a spark. I am not sure whether it is top end or bottom end though, and I don't wanna go looking myself, I can take it to a mechanic but in the mean time I just wondered what you guys think it might be.

People have told me it could be the piston rings, small end bearings, piston, etc, which I have priced up, but reading an earlier post of Keith's he said with no oil the most likely thing to suffer would be the big end bearings. How much do these cost??? Any idea???

Thanks

I got quotes of approximately...

£62 for piston, £8 for head gasket, £26 for rings, £2 for base gasket. Small end bearings weren't that much either. I am sure big end bearings are quite a bit more than the £5 you say though Ropehead. Do you mean all these parts will cost me the earth..... looks to be about £120 as far as I remember with VAT included..... that doesn't include the price of big end bearings though.

Can get the mechanic to fit it for free, although i'll give him some dollar anyway cos he's sound.

Hi

The big end bearing will be alot more than £5, and normally comes as a kit with a new conrod and crank pin. Think he was getting confused with main bearings, which are anything up to about £20 depending on quality.

To change the main and big end bearings you need to drop the engine out and split the crank cases, and for the big end then press the crank apart.

Doing the top end should be fairly easy. I would be tempted to strip the top end and then check the big end before splashing out to replace that (let alone doing the work to drop the engine out).

If the bike has just nipped up then the piston is likely to be shot, but you may also have damaged the barrel

All the best

Keith

When my main bearings went on my RS125 (without warning) it cost me £500!! it was about £200 parts (mains are £25 each and there's 2, and loads of expensive gasket sets) and I was lucky cos i could get away with just polishing out the slight scuffs on the barrel which would have cost an extra £100, I wouldn't atempt the work urself unless ur gonna sell th bike quickly afterwards but that would be pretty dirty Rolling Eyes , it takes alot of skill to do the job with things like crank balancing or something technical like that. For ur wallets sake i hope this ain't whats wrong

Hi

Last time I asked the main bearings had been upgraded to a new spec, and were now just under £20 each (plus VAT). Top end gasket set is around £30, but there aint that many gaskets needed for the bottom end. Allow about £50. About £80 for a piston with rings. Then a fair few hours work. Should not be more than £300, so at £500 someone was making a nice profit!

All the best

Keith
