Hi all, not been on here for a couple months or so, but here goes.

I've decided i need a new job after having been there for nearly two years, and it's thrown up a few issues.

I went for a first interview this Wednesday, took the day off as holiday, and told my boss the day before that it was for an interview. He went spare basically and made me feel like a traitor.
He then said if i needed time off for interviews i was to see him first and clear it. I don't see why because holiday is holiday - you dont need to give a reason to want to take it??

After my interview on Wednesday they said they wanted me back next Tuesday for the second and final interview, and of course i said i will go. I told my boss first thing on Thursday morning that i needed to book Tuesday afternoon off and he made me feel like crap about it. In not so many words, he said:

"Well you are entitled to time off for interviews without using up your holidays, but i'm not giving you any. Why should i grant you time off for someone elses gain. You can either book it as holiday or go whistle. Infact i wouldn't bother going for the job! You're only 19 remember, they wont give you a chance because you want too much money and are too young. etc etc" Evil or Very Mad

He really slated me and has dropped my confidence through the floor about my abilities. Sad Part of me thinks 'fuck you!' and the other thinks 'is he right?' Is it so wrong that i want out of my dead-end job and want to forge a career for myself elsewhere? I know what i want and it's not in my current job!!

Can i put in a complaint about his behaviour, and is he right that i am entitled to time off work for interviews without using my holiday?

Another thing, if i dont get the job on Tuesday i dont know what to do... i've seen my bosses true colours and how little they value me after breaking my back for them all this time. I dont want to stay there any more!!

sorry to hear it but your boss is bang out of order, its not proffessional and i'd tell him where to put his job. if you arent good enough then you wouldnt of been asked back for a second interview. take the time off as holiday then you wont owe him any favours plus youve got your heart on leaving anyway so might as well start using any holiday time your entitled to. if you dont get the job on tuesday then dont worry, keep looking and applying. it may be hard going back but it'll only be temporary and will spur you on into looking even harder for another job.

Good luck with the interview.

It sounds to me like your boss doesn't want to lose you. He's trying to damage your self confidence so that you don't get the job and have to stay working for him. My advice would be to get the hell out of there either way, being sure to let his boss know what he has said and done (if he has one).
If the new company didn't think you were good enough, you wouldn't have got a second interview. The only reason to do a second interview is if there is more than one candidate who is good enough. This time you need to make them think that they need you to work for them.

Good luck with it and remember, you are still young and there will be plenty of jobs out there if you are prepared to look for them Thumbs Up

What possessed you to tell him you were going for an interview?

It's done now, but best of luck with the second interview.

Shaggy and Bazza, i only told my boss that i was going for an interview because i thought i would get a different reaction. Two of my friends have left in the last 8 months and they were shown so much support and understanding.

I told my boss a week or two ago that i wasn't happy there anymore, and he said he would see what he could do to keep me there, but he just completely forgot about me. That to me suggested i was replacable, so after telling him again i went for the interview.

Another thing he seems to think is that i'm going for the 'wrong reasons'. The two girls i mentioned earlier had the 'right reasons' it would seem - one was moving to London and the other wanted to go to uni instead. Because i just want out it's 'wrong', so that might be why he's making things difficult i guess??

unfortunately, when it comes down to work, no one is irreplacable theres always another person out there. But the fact that your boss is handling the way he is shows that he has very little people skill. Its practically bullying you into staying, and its not on. Its not up to him to decide whether or not your reason is the 'right' reason. Doesn't matter where or why you want to leave, youve got a better opportunity now and thats reason enough. Its partially his own fault that hes failed to address the issues you brought up a couple of weeks ago.

I finally quit my old job last year, was there for 5 years and i felt i was irreplacable even though i knew i wasnt. Did feel guilty because i cared about 'my team' but the longer i was there the more i resented it. Told my boss in plenty of time and even offered to stay until i trained someone up to the same standard so he was understanding and happy with that especially when like you i'd broke my back for the company in the past. If hes not usually a penis, maybe its worth trying a similar approach?

Let's just clear something up.

There is not a company on this planet that would hesitate for a heartbeat to "let you go" if it suited them - irrespective of whether it would cause you personal hardship, financial difficulty, divorce, eviction or anything else.

The only time they should hear about your interviews is after you hand in your notice.

I've never heard of companies giving you time off for interviews, sounds like complete BS. Like others have said, you either call in sick or if feeling guilty book it off as holiday.

Hi Leggy, good to see you back on here!!

Personally I have to agree with Bazza - going for interviews is a private thing and no-one need know until you need to hand your notice in, because it will just cause problems if you don't get the job. The only time you 'get' time off to attend interviews is if the company make you redundant I believe, otherwise you just have to book holidays.

Sounds like your boss is an idiot though, try not to let his comments bring you down, but let them make you more determined to succeed!

Anyway, best of luck for the second interview, I will have my fingers crossed for you! Thumbs Up

Thanks very much for the info and advice guys. I feel like a plum having told them about the interviews now Embarassed I guess that's my honest and trusting side getting the better of me after what you've said.

Oh and when i said 'i thought i might get a different reaction', i didn't mean i wanted them to get on their knees and beg me to stay Laughing i hoped they might have said something like 'do you want to talk about your problems or can we convince you to stay?'

I'm so gunna ring in sick on Tuesday though just to piss them off! Roll on Tuesday!!

p.s. i'm gunna laugh every time i see him now because of the eloping joke Laughing Thumbs Up

I've never heard of time off allowances for job interviews. Holidays, yes, but not for interviews.
You could have a word with the CAB, or indeed just email them, to check.

Next time, though, it's probably a good idea not to tell them. They are after all paying you whilst you're involving yourself with another company who isn't.

You're under no obligation to tell your employer what you intend to do on your holidays unless it's likely to have a significant effect on their business ie you're a cat-walk model and want to go do the Dakar on a factory KTM or do the world pit-fighting championship in Bumfuck, New Jersey:mrgreen:
