Need a new phone, got about £150 to spend.

Want one with a camera and one that can play MP3s and realtones.

Thinking of: Sony Ericsson W810i, Nokia 6280 or the Samsung D600.

Any thoughts?

Ta Thumbs Up

Why the hell does anyone "buy" a phone other than a cheap-as-chips basic model? If you're spending £150 on a phone, surely you're using it a reasonable amount and you'd be better off on a contract with a free phone included?Just looking at the first deal I saw (VodaFone) £25 a month gets you almost any phone free and 150mins/500 texts (or 225 mins and 100 text). You get it half price for the first 6 months on an 18 month contract.

Total:

£375 for 18 months
Free phone
150 mins and 500 texts per month
(or 225 mins and 100 texts per month)

Works out at £20/month including the phone

As I said, that was the first deal I looked at - there are probably better deals to be had if you check all the networks.

Dont want pay monthly, don't like the contract having you tied in for 12-18months.

I pay that much money for a phone so that it's my camera/mp3 player as well Thumbs Up

I found my W800i was a really good phone Thumbs Up I used it mostly for music, I now have a W850i, it does much the same but has the 1gb card Thumbs Up
I think you'd be making a wise choice with Sony Ericsson.
And you'll probably get a brand new on on ebay....

Worth noting the newer Sony Ericsson phones you can use a MP3 of your choice for a text alert. Samsung don't give you the option to do it, only the ringtones can be MP3's. Wink

That's interesting.... Confused

So now I've narrowed it to the D900 or the W810i, but I'm stuck!

w810i Thumbs Up

I've had mine for a year now (just about to upgrade). Here's a few pics that I've taken with it to show the what you can expect from the camera...

https://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a231/steveqpr/DSCN2122a.jpg

https://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a231/steveqpr/MGMGrand.jpg

https://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a231/steveqpr/Frankfurt3.jpg

https://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a231/steveqpr/Bikingd.jpg

These have all been reduced in size using irfanview so the actual quality is probably better than you can see.

Hmmm, I think the pic quality on the W8010i and the fact I can have an MP3 for a text & ringtone is winning it for me Thumbs Up Cool

And i always thought a phone, well phoned. If you want a camera, buy a camera. You want a mp3 player buy a mp3 player. I have a w810i, and i use it to make calls and send texts. As with all phones the music playing and camera functions are at best, poor.
On another note if you can wate untill next month i'm due an upgrade so will be selling my w810i.

do you want a FREE nokia 6280, with 1200 free mins a month and 600 free texts a month, and free line rental for 12 months? meaning you spend NOTHING but the cost of electricity to charge the battery for twelve months, and you can even cancel it after the twelve months costing you nothing!!!!!!!!!!

not all music and camera functions are poor, sounds like you have the wrong phone, mine is shite for camera, but one like my mates is more like a camera with a built in phone, just depends what you ask for in the shop Rolling Eyes

Buying a phone for £150 isn't much different - you just pay the cash up front instead of throughout the 12 months.

Anyway, my contracts are up for renewal today! Think I'm going to jump from VodaFone to O2 and get these two:

I use a W810i, have been for around 6 months. Put a 2 gig memory card in and it holds a decent chunk of music. Certainly enough to keep me amused for a week or so of reasonably heavy usage. Battery life is more than adequate as well.

Not used the camera too much, so I wouldn't like to comment definitively. Used it to grab snaps a few times though, and it's always taken a decent image at short notice. I take a diametrically opposite view to Jay though, I don't like to be carrying umpteen gadgets around unless I specifically need them at that moment. Carrying an SLR on the offchance I might want a picture, and a walkman/MP3 player as well as phone (particularly given the fact the Sony Ericsson earphones fit inside a helmet so well and also let me make/take calls on the move as well as listen to music as I ride, without spending a fortune on Autocom kit) strikes me as a bad thing to do, treble the chance of losing or breaking an expensive item.
