Hey guys, been riding for a little while now on my trustworthy CG125.

Am thinking about taking my proper test in the near future; 33bhp sounds a lot nicer than the piddly 11 im getting on the CG. Smile

Id like to move onto something sporty when (or IF lol) i pass.
Ive taken a look at some 250s, but there dont seem to be many aroung that are going to be legal for me to ride. i know im probably gonna have to restrict it.

Can anyone give me some well needed inspiration and information? ..... please?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

P.S Is there a possibilty i may poo my pants after being used to a CG??? Laughing Question

Sports 400 restrict fine to 33BHP, FI International do the restriction kits.

250's are harder to come by, So are the spares. 400 is the better option.

Get a sporty 600 if you can afford the insurance and restrict that!

Big bike but still the same jump in power...

and once those restrictors fall out.. its like getting on a brand new bike!

Buying a 250 and you might grow bored with it, and dont have the option for restrictors to fall out in the garage. Wink

There is a power to weight ratio element to that law that makes RS125's illegal for a 33bhp license.

Depends who you believe for the weight figure, who you believe for the power figure, and whether you use the wet or dry weight.

The legal limit is 25kW and 0.15kW/kg.

Claimed weight of an RS125 is 115kg (dry), so theyw would be allowed 17.25kW (23.3hp). However if you go for the wet weight then you can add 14L of petrol, 1.4L of 2 squeak oil, about 0.8L of gearbox oil and about the same of coolant. Say 15kg, which allows 19.5kW (~26.5hp), which is about what a modern RS125 puts out at the back wheel.

All the best

Keith

Most important is to decide on the type of bike you need, roads you use, millage you do, money you can spend, touring/scratching/trackdays, theres so many different bikes you need to decide how you will use it...

Buy a focused/uncomfortable sports bike to do 300miles at a time you will hate it, buy a big lardy touring bike to go back lane knee scrapeing or trackdays and it will be utter shat...

Depending on what you get chances are you will find rideing it allot less frightening than the cg... biger bikes are much more stable, the brakes actually work and you can get out of the way of traffic...

You'll probably find yourself giggleing like a lunatic whatever 33bhp bike you get...

I'm still a novice myself but think you'll adapt to the power increase without any problems at all and possibly will outgrow the 33bhp very quickly also, which is the frustating part.

Its all about having self-control really, using the power sensibly and the bigger bikes tend to be smoother to ride, easier to balance and generally get better 'space' respect from cars on the road as well.

You'll never go back Smile Thumbs Up

So true..

The CG is a truly scary machine to use. The fact that I can walk from the rear up to the instrument panel (astride it) without touching it is bad enough, let alone the rapid steering and harsh ride quality. Old ones always sound like they're shaking themselves to pieces too... Smile

Having 30+ horses in a 125 GP bike weighing 100 or less kg must be a bit hairy, that's a bike you could pick up to move! Shocked

Do what i did, jumped on the CG, had that, took my test on it then rode it for a following 5 months then bought myself a ER5 and restricted it to 33bhp.

From jumping to a CG to a ER5 is fun but you have to watch out that you don't get too carried away! The 33bhp is a nice step up from a CG and the ER5 is a nice comfortable ride. And also if you need the restrictor washers dodsi can sell you some cheap ones! Also you can pick up ER5's really really cheaply from ebay!

Good luck to what ever you do Thumbs Up

I mean that with one leg either side of the machine (stood astride it), no part of the bike touches me until I get up to the top of the tank. i.e. it's a Japanese midget bike, even my 6'0" frame looks ridiculous on it.

I went from a CG125 (11bhp) to a Hornet 600 (95bhp). That was quite a jump. Laughing Laughing Twisted Evil

how much deos the cg weigh, im jumping up to a bike that weighs 160kg's and has 40hp, which is 0.25 power to weight ratio. i just wanted to do the maths on the cg, to see how much faster my new bike would be. also it has 40ft lbs of torque which is quite a bit so i assume that will also help.

A CG is about 95-100kg, with about 11hp. About 0.1 hp/kg. That's still 100hp per tonne, there are plenty of cars that are worse than that! Laughing

Appart from the power you'll notice the handleing difference, which imo is more important..

Put it this way, my transalp is on paper very slightly more powerfull than my cx was (+it was down on compression by 30%ish!), also a hell of allot lighter (190kg instead of 230+) you'd think its allot faster?

Well not really, if anything i'd say it was less! but the handleing is FAR superior, the brakes are far sharper and because of this its easyer to go fater than before without the bike feeling like its bending in the middle its easyer to make better progress...
Haveing said that i still find it difficult to keep up with a couple of mates cx500's/GL650's (the lardyer touring version of the cx) because they are simply better riders than me.

If you wanna go fast then training is the way to go, all the more satifying overtakeing crotchrockets on a heap o'carp that fell out of the late 70's Razz

Most 125 motors, even mild four strokes are actually amazingly powerful compared to car engines.
In specific output, mines good for about 140 horses per litre, compared to a firebreathing v8 5.7 camaro, which is only good for about 60-70 horses per litre. A dodge viper is about 63 Very Happy
