Got a video here: https://video.google.co.uk/url?docid=-2015554469142545363&esrc=sr1&ev=v&q=GS500+Valve&vidurl=https://video.google.co.uk/videoplay%3Fdocid%3D-2015554469142545363%26q%3DGS500%2BValve&usg=AL29H22fhsmU2ic5B3LKZSH-R5hKkctOXQ

While the bike is on bricks I'm going to check the valve clearances (and then balance the carbs), just a few questions:

1) Where can I get a Suzuki Shim tool from and not pay stupid prices?
2) Do I need a special tool to read the shim thickness or can I take the face value?
3) Where can I get shims from in the UK?
4) Do the bolts on the rocker cover need to be torqued back on?

Cheers,

T

hey toby,
you dont need a special tool, a screw driver is how i did mine, but any suzuki shop will sell you 1 or m&p https://www.mandp.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=500596
https://www.motorcycletoolchest.com/photos/08-0018-2T.jpg

2 you could use a micrometer to measure the thickness of the shim, but i would just take face value.
3 any bike shop will have shims, suzuki and i think yamaha??? are the same size... (not too sure)
4 they are supposed to be torqued on, but i never bother, i give it the hmmm that should be tight enough method, (with your luck, i would get a torque wrench Very Happy)

Heh, should be ok, I've actually done quite a bit of stuff to it! It's just when stuff goes wrong I piss and moan :>

I want to get it running and idling nice though, and valves/carb balancing is the last thing I can think of Smile

I won't bother with the micrometer.

Just gotta debate whether £25 is worth spending on this tool...

Why?!

My advice is to just leave them alone.

Haha, I would be tempted to keep it if I could get it running spot on... That's the thing, if I can't get it perfect I will literally throw it in the bin... always been like that Very Happy

Looking at a ZZ-R though, tempted...
