Hi.
Firstly this is not regarding a bike but i dont think it makes a difference. I am trying to get the steering cable of my boat. I'm having trouble with a nut just like the one below. (at the end of the red tubing). Ive tried an adjustable spanner but that just keeps rounding the nut off. I tried stilsons next, again with no luck. Any body have any ideas of a tool which may work and doesnt cost the earth?

Can you get a ring spanner on it? Or is it a continuous cable?

A decent fitting spanner (not an adjustable) would be the best idea. Although if you have already had a proper go with a good pair of stilsons then I thought it would have loosened off with them.

No, its a continuous cable. I might be able to get to it with a ring spanner if i can get the bolt off the other side of the engine. But the nut is just as difficult.

Look for an open ring spanner. They're available for working on brake systems - draper I think. Mine has 11/13mm rings on it. Might struggle with other sizes.

Considered butchering a ring spanner to make one?

Not to sound like an asshole, but are you sure it isn't a left handed thread or something odd like that?

Seems a bit ott on the tightness front otherwise

I was just about to say the same thing as the power-trim and tilt cable's on my boat are left-hand threaded

Lol, tis a good point. But yes have tried budging it both ways and its stuck fast. The boats been sat in a barn for the past two years and i think its just down to corrosion. Im going to attack with a ton of WD40 and see what happens.
I'll also have a look at those open ring spanners!

They reckon that PlusGas is much better than WD40 for these instances. I have never used it myself, but thought I would pass it on. Also if you can see any of the thread you should be able to work out whether it is a left or right hand thread before exerting huge amounts of force on that nut the wrong way. Very Happy

Get a strong combination spanner and cut a notch out of the ring-end to slip over the cable.

What ever you do don't heat it up if you want to reuse it as there is a nylon jacket in underneath the sheathing and if you melt that the steering cable will stick when in use. i know as i did the above Doh!!
