Hi,

My MOT failed on these things:

Failures

Nearside rear position lamp does not illuminate immediately when it is switched on (1.1.3a) - Not bothered about this, 50p bulb.

Nearside front shock absorber seal failed and leaking oil (2.3.1c) **DANGEROUS** - so fork seals need doing I know that... Didn't think they'd fail though.

Centre rear suspension bush has excessive free play (2.3.A.2a(i)) - What?!

Advisorys:

Offside rear roller brake test indicates slight fluctuation of brake effort (3.3.A1d)

Nearside rear brake disc slightly scored (3.2.A11) - Was a secondhand disc fitted with new pads, so not to bothered

Nearside rear drive chain worn but not considered excessive (6.2.1e) - I know about this

Notes:

Warning: In my opinion, the vehicle is dangerous to drive because of defects marked as such on the failure and advisory documents - Is this some default blurb, or is my bike knackered?

So I'm off to Wyders later and see if I can score a new bike Very Happy

I think they have to say this in case your involved in an accident on the way back, sort of, 'I told him it was too dangerous to ride but he still did it anyway.'

If you fit gaiters now and go back to tell him you've done the seals, he'll probably refuse to test it. We told you you should have fitted makeshift gaiters before hand.

Toby, if you werent so far away from me i would slap you.

3 Fails? Thats pathetic, go back and try again! I want half a page minimum! You've let other GS5 owners down! Its a known fact that GS500's are expected to fail on a minimum of 3 faults relating to some form of oil leak.

At least one puncture.

At least 3 SEPERATE wiring faults.

And something extremely retarded, like a reflector missing, or a sidelight bulb gone Smile

Dude, for god sake. Get on to what has replaced gs5e.co.uk - www.bikersgrove.co.uk and here, and gstwins.com and start scavanging!

I told you i have the shock which you can have complete - that will get you through MOT no worries, or its an excuse to upgrade to either an SV650 shock or an RGV250 shock.

Jesus, quit whining and do something...

Dont get a new bike because one failed an MOT Laughing

I'd get more from breaking it, which I think is going to be the next course of action! I don't want to be riding a shonker all the time, and I lack the experience/time to fix all these problems that keep coming up with it...

Seen a well nice '03 plate fazer with givi topbox, £2995, very interested.

What do you mean?

I mean you asked where the best MOT testers in the area were, and we told you and gave you a number of options. All came recommended by people who had used them loads of times.

You then took your bike to someone completely different who, as you would have known had you asked before you went, are famous (or should that be notorious) among the local biking fraternity for failing bikes on stuff other testers may have allowed because they are not doing particularly well as a business and £300 of repair work feeds a lot more kiddies/kittens/whores than a £30 MOT.

Oh, shit Sad Can I go get it retested somewhere else?

All I need is a 50p bulb, there's fuck all wrong with the forks (TINY TINY smear of oil with repeated bouncing) and I've checked the suspension bushes and there's about 5 mm of play but you really have to pull it hard!

Whats so wrong with fixing it properly? No bodges needed and the bike will be worth more when you come to sell it. It will be cheaper to fix than the Fazer when that fails next MOT. Wink

But I'll be more open to spending money on that... I mean if I spend £70 on the GS that's 10% of it's value... It's developing a shedload of problems... I shouldn't of bought the bugger in the first place but I was in need of a bike and it was from a mate...

If you do get it re-tested, before you take it down lift the dust caps up on the forks and clean any oil out with a rag. Then put kitchen towel under the dust caps, and replace them. It will then soak up any oil that appears on the way to the test station. Whistle

I was going to do that but I woke up late Sad

Is it perfectly legal to ride it to /another/ station for a retest when I've been refused one already? Will they just pull up the other test and find out?

Almost, both forks leaking

Check Thumbs Up

Luckily my bike isn't due an MOT for a few months.

But I'm here to ask, is it normal for fork seals to be leaking after less than 1,000 miles since they were replaced? Fork tubes were also re-chromed at that time Question Sad

If you used pattern fork seals, yes.

Toby, don't be so lazy, you could have all that fixed in a day. Get yourself down to a bike shop and order the bush, fork seals & bulb. I'll do the same Razz cheers Grav, thought that might be it, just expected them to last longer than that Rolling Eyes

You can get an SV650 shock, but it has to be a particular one, I think it's the yellow one. Would check gs500e.co.uk but it's gone Sad

Start learning to fix stuff Toby ALL bikes are money pits , unless you are a bike destroyer like me or a rich man who
dumps bikes once they get to 30K on the clock , this guy who I did accounts for did this he did earn 125K a month though,
I gained a rep down south for being a bike destroyer, I'd go to this breakers and look for something with MOT and tax on it,
hand over some notes (often less than £200), ride it into the ground , come MOT or tax renewal time , I'd look at how many faults
there were , and if it was economical to fix it , it never was. The only good ones were the NTV and GT550 (which I've now given
gratis to a buddy).

I'd ride down to Plymouth to a breakers who used to pay a bit over the odds, sell it to him and get the national express
back to Exeter, and buy yet another rat,

You want day in day out abusability go buy a car, or a very small capacity 2 smoke. the fazer will likely give you a bit of
free running time of no problems , then something'll go wrong , and cost you a fortune to fix , a liqu

Don't let me get Sickpup on you! , when changing fork seals ALWAYS change the bushes too , top and bottom, my seals used to go every 1000 milesish too , till I changed the bushes 5000 miles later not a leak.

You can take it back to any MOT tester Toby, doesn't have to be the same one. Downside to that of course being that you will have to pay the full fee again.

Just out of interest, how much did they quote you for the work?
