After seeing this:

https://www.steffanomotors.com/acme-r1.aspx

I've decided, rather than streetfighter the 'ace, I'm going to do something similar.

Started work today, dealing with the tail end.

Chopped the existing underseat unit right back so it's just a battery box and somewhere for the wiring. had to do some cutting of the seat unit so it could fit over and round the expansion tank, and so it's as flush as possible at the front, but it sits rather nicely. I just need to make some brackets up to secure it. I've got my eye on some leather on Ebay, which I'll use to make a retro style seat pad.

Next step is to reroute the electricks and find somewhere to stash the main battery/CDI/Alarm connection point, as it's rather bulky and was concealed by the left hand side-panel. I also have to find somewhere new to fit the scotoiler.. but that's minor.

Once the seat unit's properly fitted, I'll sort out lights, number plate bracket and indicator, and then I'll start on the front end.

Some pics here.

When it comes to doing the front end, I'll also get those damned fork seals replaced Very Happy

Always liked the 'cafe racer' look as far as customised tarting goes Smile.

Was wondering about the zx9 for something like that, but a bit too fat really.

Looks sweet, but then I quite like the custom rear-end thing at the moment.

Ebay is indeed your friend for leather off-cuts. The suede I got for my seat was £2.50 iirc for about 1m square.

Looks damn sweet Thumbs Up good luck on the project, a lot more original than fightering. Should be a bit easier, more original, and a little more timeless.

Can't wait to see the outcome.

Now that I've got some decent lights in the garage (along with a heater and a stereo) I'll be more inclined to get on and get it done Very Happy

the GPZ is ready for it's MOT this week, so that'll be one less bike to have to fettle.

Still not looking forward to doing the 'ace forkseals tho Neutral

How come? Are they particularly bad on the ace? I find the circlips alwas come out easier if the seals have already gone. I think the constant bathing in oil works wonders on them lol. Shame it doesn;t do the same for the brakes...
