The recent announcement that the Tesi 3D will be sold by Bimota in the United States this Fall is of interest for a few reasons. First of all, if you happen to be as old as I am (50) and you read motorcycle magazines as a kid, the Bimota name itself almost sends tingles down your spine. Exotic, lightweight chassis developed to house engines manufactured by others (Suzuki comes to mind from my youth) was the ultimate in exotica in this industry a few decades ago.

In some ways, things are much more difficult for Bimota today. Huge weight loss versus "off the shelf" machinery is almost impossible to achieve these days, and technology more advanced than "run of the mill spec" is also an elusive goal for any small manufacturer.

The Tesi 3D uses the unique front suspension and Hub-steering developed by Bimota. The steel trellis swingarms (both front and rear) are new, and the front suspension, although similar in concept, now uses a "pull-rod mechanism" arranged with a lower center of gravity.

The main frame is constructed of machined alloy -- a Bimota tradition.

With carbon body parts and forged alloy wheels, along with the Bimota exclusivity, expect the price to be a king's ransom. Different and exclusive for sure, the unique Bimota chassis here houses a Ducati 1100 dual spark engine (which actually displaces 1079cc).

Don't know who used it first but didn't the Elf GP bikes use it as well back in the 70s or 80s?

Similar, but the bike was a hell of a lot heavier.

There are a fair few advantages (such as being able to brake far harder and later), but also a few disadvantages (such as stuff all steering lock).

And with everything being adjustable there is plenty of room for owners to stuff up the handling totally.

Yes, very similar. Mid 80s, about the time Bimota were first developing the Tesi prototype (which was even wierder, with hydraulic controls for the steering).

All the best

Yep got to agree, that is one ugly bike, the tank is the worse part IMO.

I think it's using the same engine as the Ducati Multistrada 1100, so I doubt it.

the Tesi is a stunning piece of engineering... both in looks and technical acheivment. You lot calling it ugly have no taste..

I'll bet you're all hankering after the same R1/CBR/ZXR as all the other race-rep lookalikey style sheep Razz

Scared to be different and appreicate a bike for how it works, rather than if it's got the latest styling and colour scheme?

Not really feef i just dont like it personally, tank looks horrible and general styling is not to my taste (1098 lover myself Smile). The tail looks pretty good but it is about the only part that appeals to me, asthetics wise.

However im not saying it wouldnt be fun to ride, couldnt say that unless ive jumped on the thing myself and im interrested to see how the front swingarm idea handles on a bike, supposed to be a massive improvement?

It gives less dive on the brakes, but have big weight issues, they've used a trellis on this one to try and save some weight and keep the correct rigidity.

Saw a gts at the weekend at matlock, how many did they actually make? ive never seen one close up before..

Like the bimota very much, shame theres not more manufacturers with the guts to try doing things differently, the real shame is there will probably be 100 made all already on order that will never be ridden and be a big expensive ornament with a big doylie under it, and have people discuss the weird bimota that theres only 3 in the world of Neutral

They were only made from '93 to '94, and the only figure I could find was 883 in the States (683 in 93, 200 in 94). Any GTS claiming to be a "97" or otherwise is referring to the year it was sold, rather than manufactured.

Apparently.

I wouldn't buy one, but the engineering is pretty funky.
I was looking over a Tessi 2D last year, love the detailed alloy frame members . . . .

That is one aesthetic conversation-piece and beautiful for it! I hope its not an engine-out job for a service though...

Hi

I do like the Tesi. There was a Tesi 1D ES for sale about 18 months ago in the owners club for reasonable money. Argued with myself for about a week and by then it was sold.

Do like the 3D. Weight wise it is probably pretty light. The 2D is a claimed 149kg.

All the best

Keith
