No prizes but can you tell me the speed limit on this Rd, it often has stones. branches cow shit on it. In the rain it runs like a river and is 1-5 with blind bends.

Indeed - NSL - 60mph

Might not be overwhelmingly safe to do though.

NSL it is and I think that means 60.
Never got over 40 on it and the back was jumping from side to side at that.

There are a few roads up on the hills near me that look like that and have national limits...

I decided to turn down one a while back as I was feeling adventurous, loose gravel and mud and no space to get past an oncoming vehical... 1/2 a mile down I discover the road is just an extra long drive to some farm.... Just a bleeding dead end.

The inbred looking son of the farmer looked at me like it was the first time he'd encountered another human being... I got out of there ASAP before I was shot!

60 mph unless there is a road sign which you've missed.

It is less than ten miles from the centre of Birmingham and was built by the Romans and called Ikneald St (Sp?). Four years ago it was just dirt as all the tarmac had broke up in the frost over the years. Since they put blacktop on it it has got more unpredictable as the cow shit just acts as a lubricant between road and tyre.
We do hillclimbs on it on 6v lighting after leaving the pub, it is an Ariel club initiation ceremony. A run that hits 40mph is a good one!

Surely it must be safe to go down that road at 60. The government said so, it's anything over their speed limits that kill and not really any other contributing factors.

That was my origional point except I forgot to make it! I saw a post (I think it is in the "horse shit" thread") saying that if it is the speed limit it is safe to do that speed.
Ikneald St proves that statement very wrong.
Going down it is just closed throttle second gear with the spark advanced and back-firing like crazy!

NSL, 60, 50, 40 and all except 30 all need to have signs, if there are no signs it will be 30Mph on that road. Thumbs Up

All there is is the NSL sign, does that mean that we now need to stop trying to hit 60? Mr. Green

Thanks Arial - that's pretty much the point I was trying to make.

Most of the NSL 60mph roads in the fens have no signs, they are NSL 60mph because they are not in a built up area and there is no street lighting.

NSL 30mph applies in an area with streetlighting that lacks other speed limit signs.

But there MUST be a sign at the beginning and end of a speed limit. The ones on the fens have one at the start, then may not have another for miles as long as there is one to let you know you are entering it.

or
"what made the goverment think that 60 was a safe speed for this road."

Generally people who're unable to think for themselves go at 60 down tiny NSL country lanes is a bad idea. Those who have the ability to think for themselves can work out that 60 might not be the best idea as its a tiny road without good grip, where around any of the tight fairly blind corners there may be a horse/ heap of horse shit/ family with kids on bikes wobbling around the road/ groups of ramblers/ massive tractor or any of the other risks that are often found in the countryside.

Nearly took some fool on a bike out on Friday in my big 4x4, they seemed not to know that going anything other than slowly around bendy narrow bits of road is daft as when you're busying making good progress if there is anything else coming the other way then you're fucked, if I'd not gone up onto the grass/hedge on the LHS then I think he'd have clipped the drivers side corner of the bumper and gone flying.
