Whats the proper term for "downgearing" then?

Downgearing seems a lot more succinct than saying "Increasing the radius/teeth of the rear sprocket, or decreasing the radius/teeth of the front sprocket, in order to potentially provide quicker acceleration at the expense of top speed".

"Downgearing" is catchier, no?

You might find he is referring to when the term is used incorrectly by idiots who think that changing down a gear whilst riding is downgearing. Rolling Eyes

I see that one a lot on this forum, possibly because there is a staggering amount of people with no clue who like to try and give out advice or try and sound like they know what they're doing.

Or perhaps it's because that's what makes sense, to change down a gear = downgearing!!

Also you haven't answered the question in spite of quoting it in your last post! What IS the meaning of the term 'downgearing'? Question

No, it is changing down a gear. Rolling Eyes

Downgearing is when you change your sprockets for ones with less teeth at the front or more at the back to lower the top speed but increase acceleration. How about in future rather than say I fitted a sports can to my bike I'll just start telling people I de-restricted it.

I would have thought down-shifting would be to change down a gear, and down-gearing would be be to change the ratio in a gearbox. But then again I don't really mind, English is a language in constant flux, look back over the centuries to see the changes, it's why it survives. I agree that some of the "Newspeak" is irritating but hey we have to get over it, when we're dead it won't matter.

For what it's worth, "downgearing", down-gearing", and "down-shifting" are not words in the English language, but I like "sexdicking" and think it could catch on Smile

But funnily enough when you downshift you are changing the drive ratio, achieving a similar result to downgearing Razz

erm mine I think... what I meant to say was that if you down-gear, then you physically replace a cog (gear) in the gearbox thus changing the ratio. So if you have an industrial gearbox on a conveyor with drive shafts rotating at 100rpm it might be too fast for your needs so you'd down-gear. Whereas riding down the road approaching a hazard/bend etc... you down-shift as you reduced speed to maintain your revs/control and so on...

...blah, blah, blah, blah, blubber, blubber, flubber®

You're right, and in a car thats what you'd have to do. But as long as you dont mind the relationship between each gear staying the same, you can do it much more cheaply on a bike just with the sprockets, even though its essentially just changing the final drive.

That's because it's a shit idea. No one wants to have to look in a glossary to check what on earth someone means when they could have spelt it out in plain English. There is nothing wrong with our language as it stands, it can communicate everything we could wish so why change it?

There's no limit on the number of characters one can use in a post, so there's no excuse not to write things out fully.

Not strictly on topic, but I would disagree with you there.
English is very confusing and really quite inefficient for communication, mainly because it is a bastard tongue composed of fragments from many other languages.
