Wow these guys are pissing me off. I got myself a road legal pit bike (yeah yeah it's Chinese import) to screw about with on the road until I can afford my CBR. Anyway, it's a Shineray XY125GY VIII. On ebikeinsurance I notice on the bikes list they have Shineray XY125GY so I select that. I mean first of all the pit bike I have is pretty well known road legal one and it's often just called an XY125GY.

Anyway I get to quote, do the pay as you go thing because I just need a cover note so I can get the bike registered at the DVLA on the VIN.

22 quid, no problem I can just about afford that for registering purposes. All goes well, go to pay, then I get an email from them saying they don't accept pit bikes because they're dangerous on the road. What in the hell is this? I compared components to the actual original XY125GY (which THEY have listed) and they're pretty much the same, except one is a bigger bike. Besides the seat height on my XY125GY VIII is 30 inches so it's not exactly a kids bike.

So anyone got any advice? On the V55/4 that was filled in already for me by the seller it's got on there XY125GY anyway.

Hmmm, bit pissed and baffled considering I don't want to take out full years insurance on the bike considering I'm only going to fly about on the roads for a couple of months on just TPO.

My bike was registered from a crate and had no problems insuring it despite it being missing from the insurers model lists.

Just give them a bell and tell them the make and model number and they will find it. It will be easier with the V5 as the model and variant number will be accurate rather than all that GY.....III crap.

I expect that they will only give you TPO, not sure why, but thats all I was offered. For £11 a month, not to be sniffed at Laughing

Ok well it's actually in a crate. I put it together recently. I bought it off eBay and the seller filled in the V55/4, customs stuff, the newness document thing and a Certificate of Conformity. On the CoC it's got

Shineray XY125GYVIII

On the V55/4 already filled out for me to register it at the DVLA the guy just entered XY125GY.

Technically the VIII shouldn't even matter on the end should it? I mean it's just a bloody XY125GY in a small size. In fact the worst I would expect is it invalidated my insurance but they shouldn't right out turn me down because it's a pit bike. I must admit I did email them before I got a response and they wait until I pay, etc, then say "We don't accept pit bikes". Not exactly in that wording but something like that.

Edit: Oh I called rampdale or wahtever and they asked what bike it was. I gave them all the Shineray XY125GYVIII and they got back to me 20 minutes later saying they can insure it as Shineray XY125GY.

Hmmm..too late for me to call ebike tonight but they really are being funny regarding specifics.

If you want to register the bike then you will need:

Arrow Insurance. To obtain insurance, you need a number plate, but to get a number plate you need to regsiter the bike. You cannot register a bike withoutinsurance Rolling Eyes So, you insure the bike using the the frame number (or at least the last 6 digits) and then within 14 days you have to supply the insurance company with the designated registration number.
Arrow Visit a local DVLA office (just use google or the DVLA web page) as it saves time and you get to talk and deal with a real person Thumbs Up
Arrow VAT excempt form, if you are importing a bike then the DVLA will want to know that you have paid for the import tax.
Arrow The appropriate V form for registration, they will check the details are correct and stamp it for proof of insurance and monies.
Arrow £45 for costs of registering it
Arrow You can apply for tax at this stage taking the registration process from 45 to £53 (I think)

All in all, it took the DVLA 5 days to return the appropriate forms If I had sent it myself god knows how much longer it would have taken.

The final thing would be to go and get a UK number plate, but you do have to wait for either the hand written proof of registration or the V5 before you can go and get a plate printed.

Thanks.

I have all that stuff required except insurance (which I'm working on). SHouldn't be too hard. I think I'm going to the local DVLA office and get it done there instead of posting the stuff to them.

Just out of curiousity, who did you use to insure your "monkey bike"?
