Right pretty stuck here

Trying to install Aol broadband for my Granpa's computer, he's got all the filters etc and cables and a Router.

His computer tho didnt have a Networl card with a RJ45 slot for the ethernet cable, it just had a standard RJ11 one, so ive purchased and fitted a new Network card, whipped out the old one, installed the drivers etc.

Ive gone into my devices and the computer has located the new network card, however when ive come to install the Aol software, its telling me it cannot find the Modem.

Im pretty stuck, i cant put my finger on, is it the network card thats faulty or is it the router?

Help much appreciated.

Would the computer even see the router as a modem?

As far as Im aware it wouldnt. You would configure the router normally by opening an IE window and going thru the setup on the router by using its ip address.

What router is it?

RIght first off....

What does he have, is it a modem, router or a combi modem + router!

Then is the modem an AOL supplied one or one you bought yourself?

What is the AOL software doing? is it installing the AOL bumf or is it really needed? As Hex says you might be able to configuyre it manually if you know the account UN + PW.

When you plug the modem in does a light come on on the back of the network card?

Is it the white netgear one he got sent?

I had the same problem installing it on my grandads comp. Turned out to be the network card. Try putting the card in a different slot?

check in device manager to see if the NC is installed properly.

connect your router then

START> RUN > CMD > TYPE

ping 127.0.0.1 > press ENTER

if it is 100% then the NC is ok. if not its the NC, and its not installed properly. the 127.0.0.0 is called a loopback and is used to determine if the NC is working ok.

A) you can't get RJ11 network cards, and especially not standard
B) Try opening internet explorer and going to 192.168.1.1
C) Try a USB cable? the software will NOT detect the router if its on ethernet cable

Basically a BT Voyager Router, with the Ethernet cable hooked up to the network card. Basically i removed the old Modem and slapped the network card there.

basically you need to determine if your NC is working simple.

if you have a laptop try it with that, if thats ok 90 % chance issue is with your pc

take your tower to the house one day and connect it to the router if that works fine, then you know the issue is with the NC card.

NC can be very annoying, either they work hassle free or they do not work at all, keep on trying youll get there

Well im gonna try that, taking my Router a Netgear one to my Granpa's to see if that works or not. If it doesnt work either we'll assume its the network card.

How are PC world for taking stuff back thats been used?

normally adv them the item is faulty and you would like to change it to a different model.

It could be a motherboard issue which doesnt support the graphics card.if i were you, try some other NC cards which you may have, even your one, if one of them work swap the NC in your grandpas.

To summarise: even if you get a new NC it may still not work, as it could be the MB
