Does anyone know why the bees are filling the bamboo with bits of leaf and petals? You can see a bee top left with a bit of cut leaf.

"The Leaf-cutter Bee Megachile centuncularis is one of a number of small, solitary leaf-cutter bees. Leaf-cutter Bees nest in holes in plant stems, dead wood, cliffs or old walls, and can be seen in gardens. They famously cut discs out of leaves (they particularly like roses), gluing them together with saliva in order to build the 'cells' in which their larvae live. The larvae hatch and develop, pupating in autumn and hibernating over winter. The Leaf-cutter Bee is on the wing from April to August, and feeds solely on pollen and nectar."

Leafcutters nest in tubes, they use plant matter to create cells for their eggs.

They're making the cells the put the larvae in. Therefore kill it with fire promptly.

I have seemingly stoned fat bees trying to bury themselves in my lawn, they're not the digging kind and they can't fly much but they're uncomfortable between your toes Sad

Why would I kill them? Without bees the planet would be barren.

Indeed, and they're in global trouble.

I'm actually considering setting up a hive, if I can find a way of keeping it secure.

I couldn't care less what they do for the environment, they fuck me off hiding in the grass then getting pissed when I stand on them accidentally, granted I haven't got leaf cutters like in OP post but I'd do the same. They pretty much render that part of the garden useless as you can't go near for shit.

I hate all insects though so I would say that Twisted Evil

I'm impressed the bees round your way know what those tubes are for... I had one of those up for nearly three years at my old house (smack dab in the middle of the wild countryside, bees and such everywhere) and aside from the odd cobweb, it never saw any signs of insect life.

We get Ashy Mining Bees round our way.
They dig into the ground, and lay their egg, it looked like they were packing the holes with pollen too.
I had terrible guilts when we were redoing the garden and the bees kept trying to dig in the soil we were shifting around Sad

Wasps on the other hand, I always thought they were useless, vicious, stinging machines, but they have their place.

Caterpillars were eating my sprouts, so the wasp was welcome to it Smile

I like wasps, their faces are so angry looking. I used to freak my daughter out by letting them walk on my tongue.

In fairness to your daughter, that's a pretty weird way of bonding with your progeny.

Anyone know what good the massive round black and yellow 'bumble' bees do? they sound like helicopters and smack into your neck at 80, but they don't ever seem to be doing anything?

They are looking for food mostly and, when they find it, they spread pollen and allows things to grow.

So, as mentioned above, kill bees and there won't be enough naturally growing plants to go around.
