what size number plate do you run?
what can you get away with?
what happens if you get caught? points / fine / both?

the one on my FZ6 looks massive!

how about MOTing, if its a shade on the mall size do MOTers over look it or do they stick to the letter of the law?

I have a 7.5 x 6.5 i think - never been done yet - however have got a mot one too.
My MOT center say as long as the plate is readable from 20ft* it'll pass.
Im not too sure on the fine / points - I dont think its a pointable offence though. £30 I think.

Oh and I think that as long as the letters are the legal size it doesnt matter about the actual backing - but again, im not 100%.

Depends on what your local plod are like - Laughing

*dont quote me on that.

Thumbs Up

I've a 5" x 7"on a tail tidy, it's smaller but not taking the piss. Mind you the whole back part on the ZX6R is huge so anything is better than that. Laughing

I have a 5X7 and use it 5 days a week (along with the bike) to get to work in the city, never been challenged by anyone, don't expect to either.

Seen people on that route with smaller ones and behaving like loons, again, nothing.

Why would you need to change for the MOT ? and the legal size is 8 x 6 so if thats the size of yours then no wonder you've never had any trouble from the boys in blue. Wink Laughing

I've got standard plates on all my bikes.. it's one less thing for them to do you for if they stop you.

I've had occasions where I've had a policeman wag his finger at me and i'm SURE if I'd been on a loud sportbike with a small plate, they might have been more inclined to stop me.

DVLA have a website that covers all the specs on number plates.

I do not know points issue but three would be on the cards, as three seems to be the first number in the law books alphabet.

It is of course another thing to be pulled for.
If you never give a plod a reason to pull you there is less chance of points all that malarkey/jazz.

Exceptions:
It's fine if you're a Chav or a Ned in your nauseating-coloured iridescent-painted never-been-shagged-in-wagon.
A small one with felt tip marker-esque writing will do nicely. Twisted Evil

7x5.5 at the moment, had a 6x4 on the NC30, and occasionally used a 5x1, secured with velcro for bike meets only and for pictures haha!

The 6x4 is small enough to make the bike look better than when the standard plate is on,, without taking the piss out of the police...... Laughing

Don't see the point of small number plates. You're just asking to attract the attention of the police, and to everybody else you just look like twat no different from a chav in a 'modded' car.

Your number plate is there for a reason, so that your vehicle can easily be identified.

Personal opinion - my smaller numberplate drastically improved the rear end of my Nova SRi.

Won't hold up in court though...

The legal size is 9 x 7. Go and measure a stock plate.

I have 8 x 6 on mine in a slightly nicer font, but not that chav curly shite.

simple as this really

Character Height = 64mm
Character Width = 44mm
Character Stroke = 10mm
Space between Characters = 10mm
Space between groups = 30mm
Top, side, & bottom margin = 11mm
Space between vertical lines = 13mm

So at most a plate can be

163mm Height
228mm Width (unless my mathes fails me)

someone else can translate that to old skool measurements

straight from the DVLA, anything else is a pull regardless of what anyone says.

oh pre 2001 bikes can be 3 lines which would affect the above size but who would want a 3 line plate.....
