Decided today to sell my FMX650, and trying to figure out what bike i should go for next.

I like the look of the 400cc crotch rockets, but was told 600cc take the restriction of 33bhp well?

And is there much difference in insurance costs? My FMX650 was £900 (gulp).. ( Although i was 17 with 3 points with a 650cc bike, I doubt any insurer would have seen that as a good thing).

Back to topic, any suggestions on which bike to get? I have a budget of around £1600, as part of this is because i need the money for other things.

Thanks alot for any help, Alpine

So either i asked a stupid question, people wont reply because i have 3 points for doing 33mph in a 30, or because of my age.

Wow, you gave folk a whole hour and forty minutes or so before throwing your toys out of the pram. Over tea-time as well, when folk are travelling and eating.

That attitude'll get you far.

The 400 crotch rockets are brilliant Thumbs Up
Pretty easy on insurance too, though I cant be sure because of your points. Im 17; have just passed my A2 license, riding a CBR400RR (Triarm) which cost me £700 when bought. I think my insurance is around £412 a year? And in all honesty i havent explored a fraction of the power the bike has to offer yet (as its sort of half on the road at this point). Ive never heard them called gutless and they wont let you down on cornering, though im not sure how much you will like coming down from a 650cc bike to a 400cc. 600cc bikes WILL take the restriction but once you hit the 600cc bikes your insurance will take a small jump.

Well, my FMX650 is a single, 37bhp standard. So as far as i know a 400cc crotch rocket will offer more power.

And with the 3 points, i think the 400cc is the way to go. Although it wont be cheap, a 600cc will be way out of reach, im guessing.

And £700? I want Thumbs Up Wink

Crash damaged! Its been a 6month project so far and im still finishing off small things to get it passed MOT. You'll tend to find that most 400cc's will kick out 50-60bhp (inline 4's) when new... most of them are older bikes and will have lost a few ponies over the years. Although 400cc bikes are quite reknown for being tough, if something does go wrong you must be prepared to get your hands dirty, as in my experience, dealers dont have a clue when it comes to grey imports (as most of the 400cc crotch rockets are!) and parts can be hard to come by.

Heres a picture of my baby as she stands now:

Project thread is in my sig if your interested Thumbs Up

She's a moderator, and impatience isn't a virtue, nor is it generally a way of getting more people to post.

I was going to answer but have now decided against it because of your attitude! Razz

And it wasn't a flame, she was giving an opinion as to why people haven't responded.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

what about a bandit 600. you should be able to ge ta half decent one.
i sold my mint bandit to someone in work, and he is well chuffed. it cost 1700 notes, but is well worth it. if you look around you may find a nice example. but take your time, as mnay are thrash machines.
with your budget, this may be the best option.

all the best. Thumbs Up

I doubt how people can judge my attitude from one post.

And i highly doubt im the worst case member on this site.

And by the way, I would love it if we could get along. Take my second post the wrong way if you wish.

But I love biking, my attitude does not stink, all bikers i meet end up friends.

Back to the subjet, as usual, does the front have a headlight?

And snazzy indicators? Wink

And ill have a look into the Bandit also, I love the naked bikes.

But im slightly leaned to the 400's. Although the dealers not knowing what to do is slightly worrying. Exclamation

LOL bazza Laughing

Alpine, Mods(like bendy) on here generally don't have the 'power trip' I have seen elsewhere, and all the people I've met off here are sound people, but you have to get used to the forum(rather us members), it won't get used to you. i'm 18, booking my A2 test for mid may, and will be looking ideally for a CBR400(like fentons Wink )

I wouldn't take an old 400 to a main dealer, your near Norwich aren't you, I've taken mine to P&H motorcycles on Harvey lane, they do a lot of work on older jap bikes, the place looks like a junk yard but they seem to know there stuff and have done a good job on my bike when it needed a few bits for the MOT Wink

Oh yeah 400's rock for hooning about Thumbs Up but they can be little bit small and revvy if its your only form of transport and you need to cover much distance on it.

the authority figures often have a point even if their manner can be a bit annoying

best not to argue too vigorously though as you can get banned eventually

you werent to know that the forum doesnt always supply instant answers

but i hope you arent as impatient on the road

relax, plenty of time...

personally i think 400s are overpriced compared with 600's but then im not young enough to be hit by high insurance.

400s are old and get thrashed. fine if you know how to fix them, as the people who recommend them seem to but otherwise you might be better off with an sv650

or if you dont mind an insurance hit, a thundercat

a 400 dirt bike with road tyres might be worth considering though, and then there are the commuter bikes paralell twins like cb500

id recommend trying a few and seeing what you like

I agree with Colin to an extent. I think that anyone who is not prepared to get their hands dirty should run a mile from a 400. Most of them are getting on a bit and many need a fair bit of TLC. Also as they're so suited to young new riders they're commonly mistreated.

Having said that, when mine isn't off the road it's enormous fun and I'm really glad I chose it! And if you're looking for something to keep you busy in your spare time a 400 will offer excellent hobby material!

When I finish my current bit of tinkering I'm gonna post a thread in Show and Tell about my NC30, documenting everything I've done to it over the last few weeks!

Tim

He was struggling to keep up with me yesterday Wink . Doesn't take the 33bhp restriction very well. However at full power it should be a good laugh! But then my GPZ at full power would still beat it on acceleration I think, the CBR has better suspension and tyres though...
