I hear this term used a lot with regards motorbikes but haven't a clue what it is, so i did what anyone should do, google'd it.

I found this on google video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymvVv_zbOjk

Is this really what a tank slapper is? Thanks

Yep, thats a good example.

I had one on my TZR125 but not half as bad and manged to ride it out.

Once a tank-slap gets really bad there's nothing you can do (like the video).

I'm reluctant to open any video at work that involves slappers of any kind! Wink

accelarating hard over bumpy surfaces.

Landing wheelies cross up.

Stoppies(rarely)

Occurs mores readily on bikes with an aggressive steering head angle, and a light weight.

Such as the ZX6R B1/B2.

A tankslapper was what brought me off my bike the first time.

I have to be honest though, it's a really hard to see, but large bump on the A48 that has no reason there at all (the rest of the road is flat). To top it off, it's on a bend. Front wheel hit it, landed at an angle, and basically wobbled like the fella on the video did.

Wasn't going anywhere near as fast as that guy of course, only about 40 - 45. And I just slided for about 10 seconds down the road (wet weather) Smile

Naffed and/or mismatched tires can do it as well. Before I replaced the rubber on the ZZR I had a newish rear and oldish front. at anything over 30mph, If I took the pressure off the bars I could feel them oscilating and building up towards a slapper unless I put pressure on them again. as soon as the rubber was replaced front and rear then it sorted itself out.

I knew it was going to be that clip.. IOM TT,, not sure of the year...

Thats a very extreme case you see there in that clip,, but don't be fooled into thinking it takes one like that to knock you off your bike..

The bottom link on my signature was a result of a very small tank slapper at knockhill,, one that I hardly noticed... This was more than enough to push the pads away from the front brake discs resulting in no pressure on the brakes at the end of the start finish straight going into duffus Dip....

So even if you only feel a small slap from accelerating over cats eyes,, ensure that you dab your brakes to make sure they are fully operational....

Ive had one, did it from stop to stop Sad

luckily it was in first gear and its quite pokey, so i jammed the throttle on and the front skipped of the ground and it stopped.

i went home and cryed that day Sad

More probably due to low front pressure.

Had one in Zimbabwe on the RDLC. Doing about 95 down a straight road and suddenly the tarmac ran out and it turned into a dirt track. went flying past an old bloke with a donkey slapping like crazy, just gently eased the throttle back and it stopped.
Never touch the brakes or you are on your arse.

I have the aforementioned zx6r B1, so yes I have experienced ahem.. one or two tank slappers Shocked

Thankfully not been thrown yet, have rode them out by 2 methods (prob just chance they have both worked Laughing ) depending on the circumstances, either by pinning the throttle or by just letting my arms going limp and the bike sords it out Thumbs Up

i get them fairly frequently on the zxr750 coming out of a fast corner having the front wheel leave the ground while stile still leaning, or forcing the bars seems to start them off, they are more frequent now that i have raised the rear and put on risers,
you sorta get used to them.... provided they arn't the lock to lock slaps, very rarely can you recover from them Very Happy

Raising the arse end has decreased your fork rake, if this caused slapping I would want to rectify it either by reverting to stock or adding damping

Yeah - Robert Dunlop wasn't it? One of his nastier crashes - took him quite some time to recover from that one and get back racing again!
