Hi all,

Was out and about today and a copper walked over to me and warned me i would get 3 point and a £60 fine for a smaller than normal plate....

Is this the case?? i thought they could only give you £30 on the spot, really didnt think it was an endorsible offence!!

Thoughts please??

Not as far as I'm aware, no.

The penalty for failing to display a registration plate (and unless it meets the legal requirements, it isn't a registration plate) is a fine of up to £1000, and the DVLA can withdraw your registration mark and issue you a Q plate instead.

The FPN of £30 and/or a vehicle rectification notice seems to be the most common penalty. It's not an endorseable offence, so no points.

Edit:
According to the DVLA web site, the law states:

The law states that,
* You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
* Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not bedisplayed as A242A BC).

Offences may result in any or all of the following:
* A fine of up to £1,000
* The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN
* The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test

Thats what i thought, but wanted to check.... if it was endorseable i would probably change it but if not i will take the chances...

Cheers

Coppers have also recently been issued guidance to use common sense on dark visors and small plates.

As long as it's readable from 20m the guidance states the the plate is ok. If you have a 4 x 1 then that's piss take, but 8 x 6 and 7 x 5 should probably be ok.

Same with dark visors, as long as you are using them on a sunny day you shouldn't get any problems.

Check out this month's bike or MCN(i know, i know) from about 2 weeks ago.

It's rather annoying, I see this number/letter rearranging on cars all the time i.e. posers trying to look cool with their fake private plates. But, as usual the bikers who try to trim down their properly lettered/numbered barn doors slightly end up being singled out with a fine.

Did you know, that by imposing a fine on you equates to the police officer acting as...

1. Police officer
2. CPS
3. Jury
4. Judge imposing sentence

and is therefor not strictly legal. He is ONLY a copper.

So I have heard Smile
