Had an Ambulance come back mid-shift today for a re-stock, and clean.

They'd attended a Bike Vs Dustbin Lorry accident.

Biker had his leg almost severed at the knee, and had to be air lifted from the scene.

Since I've been working for the Service it's really enlightened me to the dangers of biking.

Had one just a couple of weeks ago that involved a biker having his arm "Ripped" off! Sick

Just last week one of our crews attended a "Motorcycle Fatal".

Everybody knows the statistics regarding the safety of biking, it's shoved down our necks enough after all.

But it wasn't until I started my current job that I realised how common bike incidents actually are. By this I'm NOT talking about the average "Off" where the rider gets up and brushes off the dust with only a few bruises and a bit of damage to the pride.

I'm refering to REAL SERIOUS, Loss of Life or Limb, accidents.

From my station alone, the crews must attend at least one a week.

The actual count, for all attended RTC's that involve bikes, must be around 3 or 4 a week (that I hear about). Not even exactly a bustling City area either.

About 1 in 10 threads on this forum (just lately) seem to be about people having "Offs" or "Near-Misses". I've just read a thread by Tiger777, that tells of a very close escape.

OK.
Now how many fatal/serious car accidents do they attend each week?

Bet its a lot more.

Sure there is a lot more cars on the road, but they are still just as prone to crashing into each other.
Look on the bright side, At least when you go on your bike you will go happy, unlike all them who perish in their tin boxes.

yeah and i would also bet the bike accidents are usually caused by idiots in cars etc

there was an accident the other week im Armitage, Staffs where a HGV pulled out of a site without looking and 2 bikers were killed!!

I rode past that turn the day before and never thought it could be as dangerous as that.

Far from it. I hear of FAR FAR fewer Serious/Fatal accidents involving cars. (the criteria for "Serious" is as my first post).

I have no real figures, but yes, it is accepted that there are a greater amount of accidents involving cars. This is, obviously because there are a greater number of cars on the road.

But it also must be accepted that it takes a lot more of a smack to deem a car accident as "Serious" by the same boundaries. Mostly, probably, to do with the fact that modern cars have to be equiped with nice Crumple Zones and Fancy Air Bags etc. Since I've been working for the service I've only heard of ONE "Roof Off" car job.

I'll bet that most collisions involving Car Vs Car aren't even reported. Don't the statistics say that the vast majority are around town at speeds of 30mph or less. These sort of collisions in a car rarely develop into much more than the occupants being a bit shaken up.

Whereas, if you're on your bike and run into someone at 30mph, it will more likely turn out to be a lot more serious (Broken Bones etc).

I didn't (and don't) mean this post to be either a "Car Vs Bike" thread or a "Safety Nazi" thread. Since I've changed my job, I work a lot nearer home, and even on my (now) short 3 mile journey (if i take the bike) I still manage to top a Ton at some point.
So I'm certainly not preaching that everybody should give up their bikes etc.

Just pointing out that, from the "Otherside of the Fence", so to speak, it's been a bit of an eye opener.

Someone got decapitated the other day just down from my bus stop in Birmingham.
From what I heard from one witness, the biker was overtaking a lorry, the lorry swerved towards him (dunno if this was intentionally or what?) and the biker swerved to avoid being hit, lost control and hit into the pavement killing someone at the bus stop.
This is on a road that is quite popular with people walking either side and the biker got decapitated, so a real shock in front of everyone to suddenly see 2 people dead, one with a seperated head.

If it turns out that this was the result of the lorry swerving to intentionally put off the biker then he deserves to be shot!

He must have been going pretty effing fast to get decapitated.

Maybe not as fast as you think, if you hit sometthing hard and unmoving at neck level the weight of body and head/helmet would soon overcome the ability of both to stay attached. Remember the neck is a very soft area with only 1 bone wich is made up of lots of smaller bones.

I see what the OP is saying, but reading the papers and browsing teletext etc. You do tend to see and hear of more fatal car crashes than bike related ones.
Maybe your fellow work mates are hardned to car smashes or take delight in reminding you of the gorry bike crashes they attend. I guess you stand a far higher chance of losing a limb on a bike than in a car though.

I would say that the vast majority of crews from my station are hardened to EVERY aspect of their job.

The only thing that really upsets any of them is illness, injury or accidents involving little kiddies. That's a real gut wrencher when you hear about these stories.

Certainly, they don't delight in telling me about the Gory aspects of bike accidents, as a lot of them are bikers themselves. There's possibly also and aspect of your ears "Pricking Up" (so to speak) when you hear about bike crashes, as it's a subject that interests and you take more notice.

But honestly, certainly of late, there have been far, far more "Loss of life, or limb" accidents involving bikes than cars.

Obviously crews (and me for that matter) have to be carefull in not being too specific in giving away too much detail. The patient's dignity and privacy have to be observed at all times. But I'll ask about and see if I can gain some average figures.

Maybe it's a seasonal thing, afterall the summer's just recently arrived and the bikes have been dusted off and bought out of the garage.

Its the same every year, the early part of the year I might see two or three bikes on the way to work. The last couple of weeks its into double figures. I don't have a problem with that, biking should be fun and good weather is perfect for bikes.

But when two guys overtook me at over 80 on solid white lines and they are wearing t-shirts I can't help but think its an accident waiting to happen.

It's these sort of idiots that push up the statistics.

I always wear full kit (even a scarf) even when it's 30 degrees.

I've had a few people ask me... "Why are you wearing a scarf in this weather?".

I just reply... "Have you ever had a bug hit you in the throat when your doing 80mph?".

I've been working in the ambulance service for over 4 yrs now and have only had to attend 1 fatal bike accident and that was within a few weeks of being out of training!

I won't go into gory details but it certainly had an effect on me, I was on the phone to my husband telling him how I thought we should sell the bikes!!

We didn't and I still love riding but I'll never forget the young lad who died and the situation he died in, he didn't die happy!

I've been to a number of bike accidents since, some bad, some minor but they are thankfully few and far between.

Seeing the damage that can be done first hand has certainly had an impact on my riding and my attitude to protective gear. I will not ride without a full set of leathers and it upsets me to see people on bikes in just shorts, t-shirts and trainers because even a slow speed off makes quite a mess!

But of course at the end of the day its their choice (not going down the safety nazi route!)

I'm a Riding Organ Donor. I carry the card, when I open my wallet to pay for petrol just before that ride it reminds me how squidgy I am. Still if it comes to it at least it won't be a total waste. Being a donor is probably the only way I will get my organ into a 17 year old female these days.

One of my pupils' dad was going to ride with those 2 guys but when he got on his bike he couldn't start it, so the other two went without him. They were both from the Rugeley area.

Very sad.
