This isn't about me, but a female friend from school.
Today she announced to me:
"i wanna buy some slimming tablets, i reckon if i take a metabolism speeding one and an appetite suppresant i can get skinny."
Well that set me off on one trying to tell her they were really bad for her. She's 16, quite large chested and has a bmi of 24, but still insists that she needs to lose wait, we had a bit of a conversation about it, mainly me telling her it was dangerous and she replied with "ive done more dangerous things whilst dieting trust me" which i know she has, and while she was doing them, her life was c*ap.
It ended with "if i can eat nothing but apple on cereal bars for months then ill be fine on this"
Anyone got advice as to what i should say? We ain't goin out or anything but i really worry for her because i know her too well.
Is this normal and OK for a 16 year old girl?
Many thanks,

Unfortunately this is quite common nowadays. I can honestly say that it's a recent social and culture development in most developed nations.
Girls are influenced by magazines, models, celebrities, television, movies, fashion and hundreds of other things. Because girls are mostly affected by "girl" things and idol certain celebrities, they're taught to be very superficial during teenage years. To quote Adam Frank Jr.
"Superficial people for a superficial world".
Your friend needs to understand how the bodies metabolism works and the safe ways to adjust it. Eating an apple a day and taking diet pills will NOT work. On a nutrient scale, an apple contains mostly Vitamin C and fibre.
You will find that those who have an unhealthy weight will generally try to find methods to change that, but sometimes when someone is so concerned about their self-image, distortions or irrational thinking takes place, and a perfectly healthy weight girl can want to lose weight. In the view of an idol, skinny models are a big influence in this, sadly. The idea behind weight loss is not to pop down pills, but to understand the human body. Once a person knows how the body works, they can then safety lose weight by changing some simple things. This includes the time it takes to eat, the time between meals, the type of meals, vitamins/mineral intake.
Staying away from sugar (yes white sugar) is a positive move, but one of the biggest mistakes people make when going on a diet is eating low fat/low sugar foods. Sadly those people don't understand that aspartame is used (should be banned) in England and USA, which is linked to weight gain.
The fact remains that the old saying of eat a balanced diet is in fact, true, when it comes to weight gain/loss. Unfortunately your friend would never listen to this, as she's (I hate to say this) quite uneducated on dieting. People should not try to diet if they are not educated enough on the subject. Not being mean, just being honest. That is why most people end up gaining back the lbs, because they have no idea how to maintain their weight.
All in all, your friend is basically acting quite "normal" by todays standards. You need to get some sense into her because she is going to regret trying to lose weight in the method she is thinking about.
PS. By the way, Mark, you should ask a simple question and get back on what she said. Ask her "Can I ask how much you weigh?" if you haven't already. If her weight/height/body fat amount is within acceptable range, say "Your weight is fine!!", and see what she says. Explain to her she's "average" and that there is no need to be skinny. If she gets all funny/agitated at you, then she needs to see a doctor, because at 16 this could spiral into numeral eating disorders if not discussed properly. She will need to be refered by doctor to someone who is educated and experienced in diet loss. There are safe ways, and there are unsafe ways. Those who use the natural body to lose weight and alternating food/times/diet, have the highest and safest results. I used to work in such a job once, so I generally know what is safe and what isn't. Good luck, mate!
Oh and regarding body mass index, a better way to find out if she is over/under weight is to find out how body fat percentage. Girls always have more than men, don't forget that.
If she loses weight too fast, her cycles will also change. I don't think I need to go into much detail on how devestating this could be for a young girl and later on experience difficulties with getting pregnant. Dieting is not a game :/ ____________________ CBT: Passed - (3/4/07)

This is true, Colin.
In a basic understanding of metabolism, the more you starve yourself the more your body stores more because it needs to survive. Thus when someone diets by not eating anything/starving themselves, they're actually causing their bodies to to put on weight when the person does eat (even a little). This causes what is called a rebound, and when the person reaches the desired weight, they need to eat normally to return to health (ie. enough food to get enough vitamins and minerals, a pill doesn't work). Anyway, that person starts to gain weight extremely fast.
The more frequently one eats, the faster their metabolism becomes, enabling them to lose weight faster.
The advice I always gave to people was to eat frequently and as much as they possibly can (without overeating). When they slow down food intake, they will start to lose weight, but the health impact is less severe due to the fact that they are eating average amounts of food to balance out vitamins and minerals.
That is one of the first things people must understand when trying to diet, is that it's like counter-steering

She is probably fishing for compliments. If not then as Mad said it's extremely common these days for girls to want to be uber skinny. I went through a phase of wanting to be skinny aswell Lasted all of 2 months but was enough time for me to get to be the thinnest I've ever been. I hated it. Was obbsessed with food, didn't eat so was constantly hungry and the slimmer I got the more insecure I was...
Have now put on weight and am a curvy size 10/12, fat if I compare my self to women these days.. but I'm confident and secure in myself and that's all that matters. |

Her body won't even have settled down to the shape it's meant to be yet...
An attractive woman is one who is comfortable in her own skin, No matter what size, shape, height, colour, etc she is...
Ask her...
Which of these women is more attractive?

So yeah, could going out jogging when im underweight screw with my body? |
Really depends there mate.
I'm underweight, I don't eat much mind you, and to be honest I purposely keep myself slightly underweight for health reasons (evidence suggests that having a BMI of about 19-20 for males is a lot more healthy than the standard 24).
Anyway, I routinely go out backpacking and hiking and carry about 80% of my own body weight on my back. I still don't lose or gain weight, no matter what I do, because I've tuned my metabolism to the way of my lifestyle.
If you are one of these people who currently have a stable diet and don't gain/lose weight easily, then going out jogging will, in fact, benefit you. If you start gaining weight as soon as you begin eating more, or lose when you slow down, then it could have a negative effect on you doing the jogging.

Aye, that's good thinking there Nicky. As long as you are healthy and happy with your own body then it's all good. Besides, I know this is going to sound lame, but if/when you decide to have kids you'll be glad you weigh more than those skinny girls. Anyway, I think girls forget that they need more body fat then men, so it's totally unsafe to work out so much that they burn off the required body fat. I've heard of women at 8% body fat (geez more suitable for a man) and their periods stopped completely and they didn't know why..LOL! Anyway, glad you're happy with yourself now and I'm somewhat amazed you managed to get out after 2 months. Must be strong willed, eh!
For G:
Yeah it kind of didn't make too much sense. What I meant to say was eat as much as nutritionally possible without causing uncomfortable issues and not to overeat. I actually edited in that bit regarding the overeating part so it could confuse.
I personally find it ridiculous that certain genders have certain expectations of the other. For me personally I am not attracted at all to girls that wear make up, I find it false. Thing is, my girlfriend does and I understand why she does. Sure she doesn't look very attractive to me on the surface when she's wearing make up, but I know under all that she's the most beautiful girl in the world, so it doesn't bother me. If only everyone looked at things in a similar way, perhaps all the problems with being "skinny" in girls might diminish a bit. I may be taking out my rear though right now considering I haven't slept. ____________________ CBT: Passed - (3/4/07)

When she goes through the bulimia phase, remember to stand well back after she's eaten, else she'll chunder over you.
I'm not being ironic or harsh here (despite how it sounds).
I've got a mate who, having been quite porky until a couple of months ago, had finally got her act together and cut back on chocolate and stuff ... and she was trimming down quite nicely.
She admitted that she had gone off her diet over Easter and had been literally gorging on her kids' easter eggs.
I gave it the old "surely not!" sort of thing, but she had noticeably put on the weight she had recently lost.
Last week I bought a box of Vanilla Custard Slices to work, of which there were four. I ate one, and she had one, and then before she had even finished the first one, she was reaching for a second one.
Given that I can be a greedy piglet when it comes to sweet things myself, even I was a bit taken aback as she shovelled the second Custard Slice in her gob ... but then all of a sudden she retched right in front of me, and had to "spit" out the rest of what she had stuffed in her mouth into the rubbish bin.
Nearly heaved, myself
It's definitely a mental problem As somebody further up pointed out, a 16 year old girl hasn't even finished growing into what body shape she has yet, and shouldn't be taking any sort of diet pills. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Some other nutter I was working with, a couple of years ago, came to me and asked me if I had any speed.
(do I LOOK as though I do speed? I think not!)
So anyway, I said "No" ... and then she went on to tell me how if she couldn't lose weight with speed, she had seen some (moronic) article which claims that there are tablets you can take, which have dormant worms in them, and when you take them, the worms hatch out in your belly and stay there, and "help you lose lots of weight".

As for me, I have a BMI of 17 (waist 29 inches) but a year or 2 ago I was extremely "Chubby" with a waist of 34 (age 13/14) then I ditched all the junk food and now im quite happy with my body, though i need to build up my upper body strength.
I am sure I will eventually manage to persuade my friend that these pills are gonna be really bad for her, and that excercise and a healthy diet is the best way forward.
Cheers
Mark |
Hey again Mark,
Your waist gives a good indication of your health. A lot of guys with a BMI of 20-22 have a waist of about 32-34 inches. At 29 inches, and with your BMI of 17, I reckon you're in a good fit state (without knowing your height, but you must be pretty tall).
I'd suggest getting your BMI up to about 18 (just slightly underweight) and keeping your waist within the 29-30 range. YYou should try jogging with your friend, but if you start to lose weight, you may need to come up with a plan on how to balance your weight during more activity.
Hope this helps,

Shame that "Super Skinny Me" was on last night and you can't instruct her to watch it.
The short summary is that being skinny isn't about crash dieting or a one off hit of diet pills, it's a lifestyle.
Unless you continue with a life where you can have no enjoyment of food, are constantly tired, cold and hungry plus spending every waking moment being wholly anti-social by exercising then you will always return to your 'normal' weight - if you've been dieting for a while then you'll peak above what your normal weight was before you started to diet.
The most worrying thing is that your friend is only 16, as Lozzy said her body won't even have found it's natural weight yet. What she is in danger of doing is causing her body to compensate in the long-term and she will end up larger than she would naturally have been.
