Some people think that the OE filter is the best you can get, whilst others reckon it's best to use an aftermarket one as part of the tuning process. So I ask you the good people of BCF for your opinions and experiences in the world of air filters.

I was thinking of getting a K&N for my machine and wondered what other people's experiences were.

I use whatever the shop/dealer has in stock when I need a new one. Not bothered what's on the box, but it doesn't have to be OE inasmuch as it doesn't have to be a Yamaha part.. it just has to be the right part

I have heard some horror stories about how much grit and crap K&N filters let your engine ingest Shocked a website had some pictures ages ago showing how much crap a K&N will let flow through

at least with the standard airboxes (usually meaty sponge) there is less chance of abbrasive nasties getting into your engine Thumbs Up

Did you get it set up properly on a dyno?

If you only have one bike then why risk a failure or extra wear etc. by fitting fake/non OEM?
Mine is from OEM coz I can't be arsed looking for an alternative if there is one.
Not a cost/performance factor I would never realize a difference maybe.

Possible MPG change ???

Either way not bothered.

i havent used any sort of filter on my bike for arount 10months, opened up the airbox took out the filter and put it back together but used longer bolts and some copper piping to keep the filter box open 2inches arount the side so as i ride along air flows straight into the box, and doesnt have to be sucked through the very, very restricting snorkels Thumbs Up

with the box closed up, the power loss is amazing, struggled to get to 75mph and took the rev's ages to reach 10,000 rpm. very very restricting airbox Thumbs Down...

but got round that one pretty quickly Mr. Green

It doesn't mean I'm not thinking about doing it though. Wink

I just need to find race cans I like the look of because I favour the styling of the 2004 R1's stock pipes and how they compliment the bike's styling compared to any race cans I've seen. While I am looking I'm not looking hard so it saves me money in the meantime. Thumbs Up Smile

I've not got the 2 quickest bikes on the planet, but K&N made ZERO difference.

Its also a con, reckoning you'll never need another air filter again and then the cleaning solution they sell you is more than a normal paper air filter.

Shocked Even when they're oiled?

Run a OE filter on my Hornet (Completely standard at mo).

But had a Stage One DJ kit on my Bandit with a K&N. Made a nice induction noise. Thumbs Up

The Dyno printout for "Before" and "After" showed that the PEAK power had dropped by 1bhp, but the "Curve" was A LOT Straighter, and the bike was A LOT more responsive.
Which is what I was after, so all turned out well.

Standard Can still BTW (on the Bandit that is).

I've got a Pipecross filter in the 32.5

It doesn't perform significantly better than the stock unit, but does mean I can wash it as it's made of foam, rather than replace it.

I just need to find race cans I like the look of because I favour the styling of the 2004 R1's stock pipes and how they compliment the bike's styling compared to any race cans I've seen. While I am looking I'm not looking hard so it saves me money in the meantime.

I'm still using an OEM air filter but a set of stock 2004 R1 exhausts are on their way with a de-catted Y-piece as well as a race baffle kit, for aforementioned exhausts, a PCIII and some flushmount indicators for the front. I thought after nearly two years of owning my R1 it was time to give it a treat, all for less than £460 too. Thumbs Up

I've read a lot of things on the R1 Forum that say it's not worth fitting an aftermarket air filter unless you're doing serious engine mods, so for just race baffles, de-cat and a PCIII an OEM one should be fine and in some cases produces better results.

Does anybody know why this might be?
