Any suggestions for a new laptop?

This is a little tricky to see as my screen is pink and blurry

I had the same problem with the LCD screen going pink about 18 months ago and was fixed under warranty, so free of charge. This time however, its going to cost me

I think they stated that it was a problem with the connection rather than the actual LCD screen? Cant be sure though?

Its a bit of a bolt out of the blue as turned my head for a second to talk to the wife and looked back and the LC has gone Pete Tong.

My Samsung v25 laptop is now coming up to 4 years old and has given me everything I have wanted from a home PC perspective.As mentioned before, its getting on a bit and could really do with another one with a better battery and wireless technology, but have always fancied the idea of a tablet PC so I could use a stilo or pen.

The smaller the budget the better, whats the best compromise for price, technology and useability for a laptop?

All suggestions or comments welcome as a techno plonker.

If it is just the wires then they usually just unclip from the motherboard
and the screen so it should be easy to fix.
I would get it fixed and then decide what I want.
Will you be doing banking or not I would just like to know what your
needs would be so as to work out what laptop suits.
If banking is in you need to be secure.

Having had a brief look around, almost any of the new crop of laptop systems would be fine when compared to the spec of the V25. If you just want something that will fold up and stay at home then even the cheaper Acer stuff should be OK, they're often a decent spec but the build quality can be a little too flimsy feeling to inspire confidence if you permanently carry it around in a bag wherever you go.

Tablet PCs are great toys, but unless you spend all day in meetings and need to have almost unlimited organisational ability and info at your fingertips all the time the price simply isn't worth it for what you're getting. Outside of a very specific market they're currently useless, to use one (I've worked mainly with the Samsung Q1) it's almost a necessity to have a keyboard and monitor around otherwise look forward to some interesting cramps in both hands and eyes


Paddy, I'm going to have to ask. What are you talking about when you say "If banking is in you need to be secure"? I don't know of any modern laptop that doesn't support WPA or WPA2, and most security failings are in the software. To use an old joke "90% of computer faults are between the keyboard and the chair"

I use it daily for 3d and 2D graphic design, web browsing and all the other odd jobs that come in between. You get a sharp widescreen monitor, 1 gig of Ram, 80gb hard drive, usb ports galour, dual screen compatibility and a 4 in 1 card reader, all bundled with media center xp.

So far I have had n problems with it. It happily runs high end sofware, I can readily work with 3d max, photoshop and a few other programs simultanously with no problems.

For £500 you et a lot of bang for your buck (did I mentionits also dual core)

To be fair most banking with a browser will be over a ssl connection mac or pc so it makes no difference really apart from the fact it would be much easier for someone to compromise a windows system with a keylogger,etc than a linux system you can still have someone intercept your traffic no matter what OS you use. But net banking on a secure network, wireless or not with the latest patches and a good banking password shouldn't be a problem whatever operating system you run.

I swear by toshiba laptops, i still have my one from 7 years ago running 24 hours a day after recieving a pint of cranberry juice to it's keyboard when i was pissed 2 years ago. The missus bought a toshiba core 2 duo from curry's for 700 quid a few months back, seems a decent system. T

Yeah, its largely a myth that windows is less security conscius than a mac. Simple fact is, you write a behemoth of a package like windows and then give it to a billion people, they will find issues no-one in your development team ever considered.

Windows gets more exposure due to two simple reasons. Many more people use it, so you will get more complaints over issues. Secondly,hackers target Microsoft more than say apple or linux.

I'm running an xp and feisty dual boot myself at the moment. If I can ever get my Audigy 2 nx working I may just come off of windows entirely. If we all do Linux gaming will get better. I remember how blisteringly fast unreal tourn. ran on mandrake compared to xp on the dual boot
