Hello. Psycho Hippy sent me over here, after I bored him with all my questions Very Happy

Right, I have a few questions which you lot might be able to helo me with.

I want a bike. I don't have a license (car/bike/moped).

Question 1: What do I need to do to be aloud to ride a bike on the road.

Question 2: What's the best bike for a begginer? Mr. Hippy suggest the NSR125, and someone else suggested the CG125.

Question 3: I'm 19, any ideas what I'd be looking at for insurance?

1. You need to do a cbt (compulsury basic training) or CRUD BOLLOX TRAINING then you can go out on the road with l plates on a 125.
2. I got a nsr but its up 2 u!
3.Depends where you live and stuff coz mines £££££1580 comp 2001 nsr

just start buying bike mags and leaving them around! I paid £75 for my cbt

1st thing get your provisional!! Can't take a CBT without it:)
get an NSR!!!!! Best bike for learners. If you intend to go for a sports bike later on the NSR will stand you in really good stead

Autotrader has next-to-nothing in my area, and the cheapest one is £950. Slightly out of my price range Embarassed

2: Depends what you want to do and how long you're gonna keep your bike. If you're not gonna keep it for that long something like a cg125 would be fine to learn on. However if you're gonna keep it for a while you probably want to be looking at a 2 stroke (ie NS/NSR/TZ/TZR/RG/etc...) as you'll soon get bored of a 4 stroke like the cg * (I got bored of the *acceleration* on my 0-60 in 3.2secs zx6r pretty quickly, so I'm probably not the best person to advise on this Smile

Where will most of your riding be done.. ie big towns, or open roads?

www.adtrader.co.uk is allways good for cheap bikes.. It'll probably take a while, but there are some decent bargains out there if you keep looking for a while.

3: I was paying £220 third party only on my nsr125 when I was 21. A 4 stroke or older 2 stroke will be less to insure though.

* Don't know how much you know about bikes, so:
4 stroke bikes use similar engines to cars while 2 strokes use a different design which requires '2 stroke oil' to be mixed with the petrol, though most modern bikes do it automatically.
A 2 stroke 125 will typically give you a top speed of around 100 (or a bit less for older models) and a 0-60 time of around 6 secs. A 4 stroke will usually do around 65mph and do 0-60 in around 12 secs... it'll still do 0-30 quicker than most cars though.
125s have to be restricted to 15hp (about 75mph) for a learner to use them, though these restrictors often seem to fall out Smile

Most of my riding will be around town, so I'm not looking for a particularly fast bike to start with.

Something cheap (to buy and run), with low insurance, is my main aim to start with.

Once I'm more experianced with this biking lark I'll be looking for something bigger.

The CG125 sounds about right for me at the mo. I also prefer the "retro" styling of it as aposed to the NSR.

I'd recommend a 125 cruiser to start with. It's 4 stroke so sounds nicer and is more reliable than a 2 stroke.

Also, you don't have to look like a twat riding a CG!

Mine was only £800, less than 3 years old

It's a Taiwanese bike, called a Sym Husky

There aren't many used ones around, and a new one is probably in the region of £2k

But there are other 125 cruisers out there, the most popular used one seems to be the Honda Rebel, they can be picked up dead cheap

At least there's a point for commuter 125s... I've never really understood ther reasons for cruisers in general.
(Though it doesn't seem to bad for what you paid)

If you're tallish you could also consider a trail-style 2 stroke.... they'll be good round town and have better acceleration than the 4 strokes.

Hi there,

Do really *need* a bike right now? (i.e. for going to work or college etc?)...if not, then I would advise you to spend a bit of money doing some training, and then doing your test.

This would put you in a much more flexible position when choosing your bike.

I wish I had done my test, now I am left with a scooter, and a 125, and no money for training or test.

You dont need to spend much on a bigger bike, even an old CBR or VFR can be had cheapish

At least at this price point you're not gonna lose much on resale value. I would *expect* he initially wants it as transportation rather than for the sake of having a bike. For which any of the bikes mentioned would be suitable.
Though passing you're test opens up the possibilities of stuff like the cb250, which is probably more appropriate as cheap transport.
