Some car drivers that is! Riding along today along a long straight stretch of road, clear visibility humming a tune of some description, when i see a car approaching a junction ahead of me, he looks at me, looks to the other direction, (he hasnt slowed down), the 'he isnt, is he? no? he wouldn't!?! thoughts fly through my mind, bear in mind i'm almost on top of the junction now, and yes you guesses it he pulls out. Cue me "SHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!" have to pull right out onto the other side of the carriageway, the killer is he still doesnt stop and continues into my path forcing me to almost mount the pavement at 'national' speeds (on the other side of the road!!!) What a dick, I havent had the fear of God like that in me for a long time! Glad I have been putting in the hours in recently otherwise that would have been me and the bike noicley written off! So to whoever it was Middle Finger Thats my moan for the day!

Admittedly the car driver was a mong but why didn't you slow down when you saw the car approach the junction?

It's amazing how drivers will still pull out on you even after making eye contact. I've come to the conclusion that most people are just retarded.

Still, I bet it got the old ticker racing Cool

i agree with joe - you saw him, why didnt you think that he would pull out!!!

you should have slowed down and given him room to do what he wants, save yourself by not putting yourself in the heated position in the first place.

as soon as you saw he wasn't slowing down you should have the brakes on!!!! Rolling Eyes

I hate it when any motorist does that, unless you are excessively speeding you are the correctly proceeding vehicle so in theory you shouldnt have to alter your path at all.

But you think they aren't going to go, you ease off the throttle slightly just in case, you're getting closer and you get to the point at which you think there's no way they could possibly pull out now and then they do!! Brown trouser time!

In fairness the few times this has happened to me i have been in a position to safely pull out and nip round them and most of the time they pull in close to the edge of the road to let you past anyway Thumbs Up

i never slow down when a car approaches a side road - it looks like you're giving way. I keep my hand ready over the brake, but i don;t use it untill i have to taking action when not necessary can land you in an equally sticky situation, as it is quite hard to judge the speed of bikes.

At least you're ok Thumbs Up

It’s good that you were watching the other driver’s eyes as that gives you a clue as to what their intentions are. And* after a while you develop a sort of sixth sense (which is probably nothing more than reading body language) about who is likely to pull out on you. I tend to move out to the white line if there’s a possible threat from the left and look for possible escape routes.

Around town, don’t forget the horn- if you’re worried about appearing too aggressive using it, try doing a couple of friendly toot-toots and a wave as if you know them. Gives them something to think about.

Of course, none of this guarantees safety, I’ve been T-boned twice to prove it. As you say, some drivers are just cocks.

In all fairness, there probably was no eye contact. All the car driver did was look in the OP's direction, but didn't actually see him, hence proceeded to enter the junction.

Most people see horizontal rectangulars better than vertical ones, which explains that a biker is invisible, as we have a narrow profile.

Having your headlamp on and weaving a bit sends a message to the car driver's brain that there is something there, as he sees a movement. I almost always use my horn, even when they're looking in my direction, as too often they look, but not see.

Of course it was enough.

He is not road kill is he?

Why should he need to slow down if he is on the main road? To give way? To make the car think he is giving way? Cars have priority over bikes?

I personally would have held a steady speed with full readyness to break should the car / bike / bus / lorry pull out.

He clearly was alert to what may have happend as he avoided becoming part of the cars paintwork.

Darkside, glad your ok pal and well done for avoiding a very painful or deadly experience. Thumbs Up

He should slow down Cos 1)it's common sense, 2) it can be a case of slowing down, or being roadkill Rolling Eyes

Surely when travelling across town, if you slowed down for every junction (where you had priority, ummm) because a car was there you'd be as well binning the bike and taking the bus.

It would be quicker Confused

Spot on. Thumbs Up

Makes more sense than slowing down for every cager, bike, lorry or pedestrian which approaches the main road "YOU ARE" on already.

It is your right of way, it says nowhere in the highway code that you need to slow down.

Ensuring you have noted they are there and are ready to make any nessesary changes to your speed or road position you more often than not will overcome the obsticle ahead.

If i slowed down for every car pulling upto a junction on the left I would be rear ended more often than I would have a smash by someone pulling out on me.

If he slowed down enough he wouldn't have needed to 'nearly' mount the pavement.

He should have done whatever not to put himself in a dangerous position, and even if that means stopping!!!

Maybe he should have moved into the other lane of the carriageway to let the car out, providing it was safe to do so!!!

It could have been avoided, thats what i am saying, just by thinking a bit more ahead. Maybe expecting the car to pull out, rather than being shocked when it DID pull out.

I think Darkside's story is just another one of those that highlights the dangers faced by everyone - he reacted & didn't have an accident.

Today on my usual journey, I saw a white van parked up to my left on a not too busy road, and saw, just in time the reflection of driver in the van's mirror and I slowed down. No sooner had I seen him the van pulled straight into my path..... and I was able to slow further, quickly. I didn't even have time to hoot and the van driver was totally oblivious to the fact Iwas there (at one point 2 feet from his rear bumper). If I had been a less experienced rider I would have been off.

I'm sorry but quite clearly in this situation I am in no way shape or form to blame, why keep coming at me and upon seeing me why carry on forcing me to move Brick Wall
