after putting this in the bugs section by mistake ill put it here too...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right, as some may know ive had trouble with replacing my brake pads...
after 2 days of pissing about with it i found out my caliper had siezed up and that need a new one i got a 2nd hand one for 47 quid (almost) mint and next day delivery putting it on today (now yesterday) put it on but i cant get the brakes to like, well... brake, the fluid just aint going round im not to sure what to say, i think i need a step by step from when its all connected up onwards.
heres a thought: The pistons are pushed right back, do they need to be forward?
Ive got fluid in the cables and ive bled some from the caliper it seems ok but i put the lid on the resivoir and i get pumpin'... but nothing happens.
Cheers.
someone tell me what im doing wrong plz... |

Hi
Bleeding brakes is a pain, especially if you have got loads of air in there. I have a vacuum bleeding pump which is useful at times like this. However, the other way to do it is OK, but best to get someone to help. Put a pipe onto the bleed nipple with the end into a jar of fluid. Get someone to pull the brake, then slacken off and retighten the bleed nipple, the get them to release and re pull the brake, and do the whole process again. Will take a while. Make sure the fluid level in the master cylinder does not get too low.
One other place where air can get trapped is at the top of the brake line. For this put a spanner on the top banjo bolt, wrap loads of cloth round the bolt area (brake fluid takes paint off rather well), pull the brake lever and then slacken the banjo bolt off and retighten it.
One thing that can help, tie the front brake on overnight (ie, tie the lever back to the handlebar). Seems to help get some of the final tiny bubbles out. Also can work for bleeding a clutch in a car.
All thebest
