Iwas on my way to college this morning, running a little bit late but nothing unusual there.

Mondeo infront stopped because of roadworks and to let a car through, I was folowing too closely and couldint stop in time, I hit his back bumper at about 10mph. he is going to need a new bumper as it is quite damaged, the front mudgard on my CG is buckled and the wheel wont turn so I had to get my dad to come out with a mallet and we straigtened it out enough for me to take a really slow ride home ( 5 mins).

He got out, I switched off the engine and took my lid off and we exchanged insurance details. Im not injured really, Im a bit shook up and my neck is twinging a little. Im more upset about the fact that im going to be royaly screwed by inurance now and I dont know wether or not I will be able to afford to insure at my garunteed higher premium so I might have to SORN the bike and start riding again in a years time when I have saved up enough for inurance. Sad

Your option here is to ask the driver if he would be happy to settle outside insurnace.

Get him to get 2 or 3 quotes for the repair work from different places, and they pay the bill for him.
At your age that *may* be cheaper than the blot on your insurnace record.

bluex-5, I totaly understand that it was my fault, and im prepared to suffer the concequences, the only reason I need think about giving up biking is because I cant afford to renew my insurance at the moment.

Sloces, how would i go about that? I havent contacted insurance yet but he might have.

As well as his insurance details did you get any contact details for him? Home address, mobile number etc.
If you did, call him up/visit him and offer to settle outside of insurance, and ask him to get a couple of quotes from garages.

Like i said this *may* be cheaper than taking the hit on increased insurance but I know some colour-coded car bumpers can be bloody expensive.

Somehow I don't think you can do this much damage at 10mph! Confused

Best is to settle outside insurance, if the repair costs are feasible. Out of interest what's your excess currently?

bumper from scrap yard + paint + fitting can start to run into £250+. let alone if he want a brand new one and ford to paint it. Was the bloke a cock or alright? Try to bung him £200 and have done with it.

You survived the bump. That is a good point.
You seem to have gained from the experience. That is a good point.
I hope that you will have many years of motorcycling in front of you and with your present attitude I think you will. Do not be afraid to learn from your mistakes.

I lost 2 years NCB on the car as I went into the rear of another car at around 10-20 mph. The front of my car was cracked and broken, his was superficially scratched Rolling Eyes

I waited ages and nothing in the post about claims and diagrams and whos at fault etc, so I contacted them about getting my car fixed (hence the NCB loss). I believe that he waited more than 6 weeks to contact for a claim! The thing that annoys me the most is that anything could have happened to his car in the meantime, and just made the damage worse, making the claim more expensive for moi.

After paying £200 excess, my insurance payed out £600 to have the front of my Type R fixed, the work sheet from the panel beaters was nearly 3 pages long with all the small doodads that 'needed' to be replaced.

I found out after talking to the claims department last month that his 'bill' was in excess of £3500 Shocked

Its funny how if it comes out of your pocket its always much cheaper than when the insurers pay for it.

You have set the fault right there IMO. Im not being harsh, Ive been there and almost hit someone in front because I was too close to them.
Was going out of my road, some kids jumped in front on a car, I was too close, but I managed to emergency brake and miss the car.
I was too close, and since then ive always stayed enough distance from the vehicle in front incase this happend again.
Lesson to be learned.

( I was only 2 weeks into my passed CBT Too )

If you tell your insurance company then despite the fact that you don't want them to act on your behalf, I believe you will see a hefty premium increase as whenever you renew you will have to see yes when asked if had any accidents in last 3/5 years, and that it was your fault. This will be kept on record, you can of course say it was a £0 claim amount, but still... it's a fault accident Sad

If you do decide you want insurance to cough up, I think they also generally require you then to settle the premium amount rather than continue with monthly payments, which would be a bummer.

Bad luck anyway mate but it's nice to hear you taking responsibility. While riding with friends recently, one of them STUPIDLY over took two of us on approach to a roundabout! He was too fast, grapped a handfull of brake and went down, destroying his R6 (he has since bought a brand new one). He was luckily unhurt.

Anyway first he blamed gravel, there was some but only inches from the curb which he was nowhere near. Later on he decided his gearbox was to blame as he couldn't select the appropriate gear (not sure how that cause such an accident!). But he finally settled on remembering that his rear brake locked up, funny he should forget such a thing.. load of BS anyway since I saw it happen and the back end behaved as it should plus why would you be using the rear brake at that speed (then again it wouldn't surprise me).

We would all have respected him more if he'd just said "yeah in hindsight that was a bad move, and braked leaning in. My fault really, will just have to learn from it" that would have been fair play.

Anyway good luck mate.

I ever so slightly rear ended a couple of cars in my first 6 months, not enough for any of them to ever notice, and I waited around to check if they had to give them my details, but both cases drove off without incident, I took them as a lesson that next time I will not be so lucky Thumbs Up

Nearly always best to settle a claim outside of insurance, the way I see it, insurance is only good for big big settlements and legal bills, the rest (theft cover, minor damages) just fuck you over in the long run.

I had my R6 stolen last year out my garage. This year when I came to take out a new policy on my TL, the difference between declaring the theft and not was £500...

So in 5 years they will claw back £2500 in raised premiums! I only claimed £2600 for the stolen bike! So iv saved a whopping £100 in the long run. Wish I didnt bother

Hang on,

If its just his bumper, they are very cheap to do yourself.

I've replaced the bumper on my MK2 mondeo for about £120.

Thats for a new bumper delivered to your door. You give them the VIN number and they know the paint code from there. Hence your bumper arrives ready sprayed and correct.

Its only a few bolts and you'll need some axel stands and a star screw set, but i'm no mechanic and I changed mine in about 1 hour, maybe a little more.
