One of my best mates is having a 40's style part at a bar near by, i totally forgot about it due to recent events.....
Right so, he loves the RatPack, Sinatra etc....so i'm going to get some CD's together for the tunes.
I want to get a 40's style hat e.g Trilby, and want to look the part.

I have got a suit i can wear but I dont know anything about cuts.

Help Confused

K

Tommy guns. Pin stripe suit, white braces/tie and the trilby. Trench coat if you can get it too. Oh, a big fat cuban cigar too!

What ya want is a conk......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conk

The method?

Quote:

In Alex Haley's "autobiography" of him, Malcolm X told the story of a haircut that he later regarded as a milestone in his life. It took place years before he became a Muslim and acquired the name el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz. In Boston in the early 1940s, fresh from Omaha, Nebraska, he was still known as Malcolm Little. After arranging for him to be fitted for a zoot suit, a friend gave young Malcolm his first "conk."
To avoid the cost of a barber, Malcolm gathered materials himself eggs, potatoes, soap, a rubber hose with a sprayer, rubber gloves and apron, a jar of petroleum jelly, and a can of lye. A clerk at a drugstore knew the routine so well that he asked, "Going to lay on that first conk?" Malcolm grinned and proudly replied, "Right!" He didn't grin during the actual procedure. Mixed together in a quart jar, the ingredients formed a yellowish, jellylike "glop." Thanks to the lye, the jar felt hot to the touch. A friend of Malcolm's warned him that the compound burned the scalp and added, "But the longer you can stand it, the straighter the hair." The pain turned out to be excruciating. Malcolm emerged with his original color undiminished but its natural texture replaced by "this thick, smooth sheen of shining red hair . . . as straight as any white man's."

Lots of Jazz and big-band stuff I reckon.

Glenn Miller, the Andrews Sisters, hell that recent Christina Aguilera song probably qualifies too! Louis Armstrong, Gershwin, Cole Porter, anything like that. Also early blues, BB King, Robert Johnson etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_trends_in_music_(1940-1949)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_band

Sometimes Google is a wonderful thing.

Obviously the 1940s wasn't a 'gangstery' decade what with the war going on people tended to be fairly preoccupied, try the surrounding decades, especially the 30s. Jazz music is what you want, jazz and swing, and the ability to use the internet.

Confusing? I give you sound advice, and thats what I get, you ungrateful prick.

Just a thought, but surely everyone else is going to be dressed as some sort of ganstery type? I think the Indiana Jones idea was better, how many Indiana Jones' will be there? Or you could do some sort of war dress code, eg army, RAF costume. Or just stick with Indiana.
