... between a BA and a BA(Hons)?

I may be going back to Univeristy (3rd time lucky! Laughing ), to get my degree in Business Management. The prospectus says that in 4 years I get my BA, and in 5 years I can get my BA(Hons). Here's a link:

https://northumbria.ac.uk/?view=CourseDetail&code=DUPBMN1

All I am after is a degree as it'll open more doors career doors for me. So is a BA a degree? Is there any point in getting the Hons bit? Now that I'm in my 30's I'm probably going to rely more on real world skills than book smarts, but may need the degree to get me to interviews. Would a BA suffice?

Ta for your help. Thumbs Up

BA = Bachelor of Arts (Arts degree).
BA(hons) = The same, but with honours.

BA(hons)-----------------------------v
First-Class Honours (First or 1st)
Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1)
Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2)
Third-Class Honours (Third or 3rd)

BA-------------------------------------v
Pass (no honours)

Just means you did well.

Yeah, mostly this is due to the credits system universities use.

i.e where I am you can fail I think it's 1 module and get a BA degree, which is called an "unclassified degree" here.

I think we can get 120 credits a year and to gain a Honours Degree you need to get 120 over 3 years, to get 360 credits.

However if you get 340, you only get a BA.

Hope it clears it up a little.

I see, so basically it is a degree but having a BA means that you are slightly stupider / lazier than someone with (hons) at the end of it. Laughing

5 years seems such a long time!

Thaks for the help! Thumbs Up

Don't know if this is true all of all industries, but the jobs that History are more tailored too require at least 2:2 Honours degree, have never seen a single BA job being offered.

It's only £750 a year so I've got no problem paying for it (I wouldn't get funding anyway for a part time course - the best I get is get some hardship cash, which I will Thumbs Up )

What you need to remember is that final 'honours' year is usually spent studying a focused part of the degree subject and you would usually produce a dissertation during that year.

So, an honours year can be usefull because you can gain some specialist knowledge targeted towards the aspect of that field you want to work in.

For example you can do a degree in chemistry and study for honours in say plastics or colour chemistry or analytical chemistry depending on your interests and what you intend to do after uni. Or you could do Business studies with honours in export markets or hotel management or something.

5 years doesn't sound fair to me.

I did fuck all for only 3yrs and mine was still classed as 'hons'.

Aye, but it's 5 years of only 6 hours a week Thumbs Up (plus self study admittedly)

I'd sooner spend the extra 2 years doing it than give up my current job. I get paid double what our graduate intakes get and though it would be a faster way to get the qualification, there's no way I could go back to that sort of pay level now - I would miss rolling in cash every night!

I'm only going for the qualification because if I am to go onto the senior management positions then it is practically a requirement that you have a degree in business.
