anybody else dabble in survivalism/bushcraft-ish camping. i love it.

head out into the woods, with only what you can carry comfortably (ive a bad leg so weight is of the essence). find a nice spot, out of the way, clear a space and start building a shelter. collect some wood and get some water from a mountain stream. get dinner on and wait for dusk.

climb into your sleeping bag, in a hand made shelter protecting you from the wind. close your eyes as the fire dies down, heating you as you drift off under the stars.

wake up in the morning, a gentle forest breez drifting over your face. the sunlight dappled through the leaves, the song of hundreds of birds waking up.

start a wee fire, get some water on the boil, get a bit of grub down your neck. go exploring, make a few bits and bobs, etc. anyone else do this?

Btw, the shelter was a good bit better than that when it was done lol, it does look like its about to fall down there, but it was well good. Thumbs Up

I love 'wild' camping, but not much good at bushcraft so once a year I just load up this thing:

https://www.highlander-outdoor.com/Whatsnew/Traveller%20bags/X2.gif

With all my goods and disappear for a few weeks. Very Happy

Wish I was skilled at bushcraft, though. Dead useful and really relaxing/rewarding, I bet.

ive an army burgen, loads of room in it and good and comfy to carry. theres nothing like making things out in the woods with just your axe or knife. its great. i often make traps, not to catch animals, but just for the hell of it lol, its good to make you more resoursefull and to learn to adapt to what you have.

also a few beers make it more fun sitting round the fire lol

btw can you see my pics? i cant see them on my screen?

Yeah, I love my highlander. Lots of straps and clips, looks a bit odd though as it triples in size once it's packed.

EDIT: See your pics now!

Did a bit of that in the air cadets, enjoyed it. Would do it again some time, actually two of my mates are into that sort of stuff so might do something like that with them.

That will be me this summer!

Do you get problems with deer coming into your camp? How would you deal with that?

no deer with me, just foxes, dogs, pheasant and stuff. just make sure food is well covered, in airtight containers if you can, and dont dump any food waste near the camp. other than that, animals are scared of you and fire, the smell of both usually keeps them away. and if they do come over during the night for a curious rummage, theyl be more scared of you. keep food out of the way so they dont eat it anyway lol

Thanks for the advice.

I've always had the bare essentials packed up in a small ex-military gas mask bag in case I ever need to run away from home, it could last me a night but it wouldn't be very comfortable, it will be better this summer!

This is what my emergency kit contains:

Camping Mat (small)
Bungee Cords x2
Tissues (small)
Wet wipes (small)
Bin Liners
Food bags
Torch
Head lamp
Washing line/rope
Insulation tape (small)
Spare mobile phone (small)
Super glue (small)
Fag lighter (small)
Hot glue stick (small)
Tooth brush (small)
Lynx (small)
Toothpaste (small)
Soap (small)
Pen
Dishcloth
Candles (small)
Change of boxers/socks
Bottle of water (small)
Digestive biscuits (small)
Caribiners
Plasters
TCP Sterilisation fluid
Webbing belt/strap
Pen knife
Utility Blade
Hand warmer
Hand warmer fuel

Getting an emergency blanket from the army surplus store very soon, along with some 24hour ration packs, I'm amazed all that fits in a TINY bag!

Going light and enough to survive for one night was my goal - put on my camos and a balaclava and swipe a small bag that's ready for a night sleeping rough.

The bag is similar to this:

I need to fit a couple more things in it really:

A sewing kit
A pack of cards
A army rations
A SMALL metal tin

Is it normal for 15 year olds to go to the army surplus store? Very Happy

I dunno what the guy in the store thought about me once - I bough a balaclava, a locking knife, fire starters and camos Very Happy

How much are we looking at for one of them little beasts?

Remember, I'm buying my first bike in a couple of weeks so money isn't the best right now!

Most of the stuff in my kit I picked up at the local corner shop!

Comfortable to around 2C if you're in the nud.

I can honestly say it's the most comfy sleeping bag I have ever owned and packs up in a little bag about a foot long.

Army surplus is my favourite place! This shop: https://www.feltons-surplus.com/ is just up the road for me, and there's also a stall on the market which is pretty cheap. Until now, my WHOLE kit has cost me about £20, £35 if you include a heavyweight camo jacket and camo pants!

i usually wear olive drab, rather than camo. its not as wierd when people see you walking around for water etc lol Laughing

once my mate was with me, him in full camo gear, face painted, about 6 BB guns slung around him, crawling through a bush, and straight into the path of a family, about 9 people walking through the woods. my mate went beetroot red and shuffled off back to camp lol
