Hi everyone,

New to the forum (and biking world) after passing my DAS couple of weeks ago... looking to buy a decent 600cc sportsbike, and seen a bike for sale from a nearby dealer which is a couple of years old but has just under 1k mileage. Anything I can look out for to see if its genuine, or if its been off the road for major repairs or something for a long time?

Cheers,
J

Thngs like foot pegs, should have some wear, but not a lot, or look brand new.
Tyres, are they the factory fitted ones ?
Generally look at the nuts and bolts do they look like they have been worked on.

Levers should be free from wear and both matching, check engine casings to see if its been dropped.

Important Take someone else with you to look at it as you are looking with buyers eyes and will miss simple things(everyone does). An extra pair of eyes will spot things you may miss.

and its not really unusual for sports bikes to have stupidly low mileage. alot are just bought and polished not ridden.

Seconded with getting an extra person to come with you, even better if they know what they are looking at, like a mechanic or something.

Even if you can try and convince a mechanic to come with you if you offer him some money.

Won't help here, but the Mrs's old car had MOT certificates with it, that had lower mileage than the car. That's also a give away, check the service book, I'd be highly suspicious if a bike with that low mileage wouldn't have been dealer service. Basically, no service book, maybe more than one service? Just to back up what Keir said, it is really not uncommon for a 2 year old bike to have only 1000 miles on it.

Approach or contact some local bikers and get their opinion on the dealership, if they say its a bit dodgey or shadey then take that into consideration, if they say its tip top and pristine, take the plunge and trust them.

Most sports bikes only get used at week ends so that would tie in with low mileage.
I would say 1k is "normal" for a weekend use only bike.

Thumbs Up

Picked up a 2002 CBR 600 with only 1700 miles on the clock recently, and the bike was imacculate.

Owner must have only been a sunday rider

Yea but Sunday riders won't go out if it raining Wink so say 3 wet Sundays in a row means they can then do a 30 mile nice Sunday and it balances back out.

Which, if they're on a particularly twisty route, could take them up to 6 hours.

Not a lot to do with the thread but years ago I bought an old car and found that the speedo didn't work. I took out the speedo and stuck to the back of it was a tatty label which read "f*cking hell not again".

If I only used my bike for going to and from work, it'd probably have about that. As I've got a hack bike, I'd probably put about that miles on a 'fun' bike.

30miles? a ride-out....motorbike?!

I did 36miles yesterday on my PUSH bike... Laughing

so 1000miles is more like the figure I'd clock up on Sunday pushbiking Laughing

back to the initial question...look at tyre wear and maybe compare it to the pegs if theyre scratched up like mine... ie if they're hardly worn tyres with big chicken strips, and the pegs are scratched up (ie its been leant right over..so tyres shouldnt have big strips) you can probably judge from that its done more than 1k as it'd more than likely had new tyres recently...your going to get more than 1k to a set usually.

it may just have been used for track-use? ....or he's had the speedo cable/drive messed up for a while, maybe try asking him exactly how many miles it gets to a tank/reserve?...if its only just been fixed and he aint been out on it much he probably won't know without thinking abit. (doubt this silly theory would be of any use or be right....can you tell my speedo drive rounded off last week? Laughing )

A dealer would not know any of that.

Suspect a typical 'Sunday rider' may not know this anyway.

I couldn't tell you what my hack or dirt bikes get to a tank because they tend to be used in such variable ways it doesn't really mean much.

1000 miles for a 2 year old bike is not normal. Its not exactly uncommon, but it is far from 'normal'. 'Normal' these days is around 2000 a year for a sportsbike.

Not at all, Ive got a 18 year old bike which has done a genuine 46000 kilometers. (MOT Certs to back it up).

Majority of "Sports" bikes are bought to be fair weather ridden, and lets face it, we don't really get alot of that in the UK.

My dads busa has done about 2k miles in the 3 years hes had it. and I think about 1000 of them were racked up when he went to the Barcelona GP.

For a bike with under 1k on the clock, I wouldn't really expect to see a single mark on it. Wouldn't even expect to see any marks on the fairing bolts from where they have been removed.

And to be fair, to get a bike to look like its done less than 1000 miles again is going to be a chore in its self, So I cant really seeing someone clocking it back that far.

you should see the posers up at Rivvington barn , many of them on 04 and 05 plate CBRs ZX6Rs R6s GSXRs with
fancy £££££ leathers / boots / lids to match, and bikes that have hardly any miles on them , granted with LCD odometers
its harder to see milage , but when you see OEM tyres with enourmous chicken strips on them and a full set of tyre nipples
such things don't surprise me, they ride up there sit and pose,

Another vote for taking a second pair of eyes, other than that usual stuff like; original tyres/peg wear/lack of marks and or scratches/ dealer service history/check downpipes for blueing(if its sub 1000 miles that means its probably not or has just been run in - blueing of downpipes will show its been ragged rather than run in and/or has done more miles/simple things like chain tension and condition etc etc
