Does anyone buy race scrubbed tyres a racing meets? Just wondering...

How much roughly for a set at most meets (f&r)? Just thinking ahead for some BSB rounds. Thumbs Up

Worth buying?

Have aquired some here and there.

Prices vary. Got a set of Supercorsas for £30 last year - very tasty. £50ish is probably more the norm these days, maybe more if they've not had much use.

I paid £40 for a pair of raceteks and £50 for a pair of Supercorsa's.

Worth buying? For the road, sure. The middle 80% of the tyre where you'll ride most of the time is fine. It's only the very edges that are shagged.

Think I can see where my next set of tyres will be coming from. Good enough to run a few thousand miles on road conditions?

Sounds like a bargain really.

i had race scrubs and although possibly a tad slippy in the cold and wet, i much prefer the feel to the new road tyre i have now

i had metzler racetec or something similar, and the rubber was really soft and grippy.

the stuff i have on now feels like plastic in comparison

I dont ride that hard, but i still prefer the soft stuff

i just find it a bit tricky to come by race scrubs otherwise i would have got another

Yeah, I did, with some trackdays chucked in as well.

They might have gone off from their ultimate stickiness, but still have ample for normal riding.

Your crackers, race tyres aren't designed for road speeds, they won't get up to their working temp on the street, you may as well toss your money off.
Why fit pre scrubbed race tyres?? just so you can bullshit to people on the carpark at the burger van Laughing
If your doing trackdays then yeh, i'll have it, if your fitting them as a pose then i pitty you.

But then you don't generally need the full grip they offer on the road and not getting really hot means they don't lose grip so quickly.
Do you buy new road tyres? Mas as well 'toss your money off' in my opinion. I haven't bought a set of new tyres for the road in years and have saved a decent amount of money I reckon.
Supercorsas have offered me more grip than touring tyres in wet, damp and dry conditions from cold (d204/macadam/continental something).
As far as distance goes, I find I generally get around 1500-2000 or so miles out of a front, usually going 'off' before they run out of tread. A bit less for a rear; but they've usually suffered a fair bit of 'abuse'.

Because for a similar or often lower price per mile you can get a tyre that offers the possibility of more grip.

For the record, I do have Michelin Pilot Race tyres in good condition for sale. However, these tyres don't offer anywhere near the grip from cold that Supercorsas do, so I'd definitely reccomend going from Supercorsas unless you're happy to take it very easy until the tyres are decently warmed up (I have used them on the road in the past and they're not /that/ bad, but I'd still reccomend Supercorsas which I think are very good.)

Spannermonkey; incidentally, the edges will probably smooth off if you do lean it that far. I'm happy to do a few more track/practice days on tyres that I don't sell, so they still offer decent grip.
Seen people do very well in some fairly competitive classes on tyres that people slower than them have sold on!

In the majority of cases, they're not 'race' tyres, they're road-legal tyres that happen to be used in racing. Eg. Supercorsas.

So where can you buy race scrubs from then... Trackdays, BSB type events? I could swear when I did my track day the tyre guy was only selling new Pirelli tyres.

Tyre guy wont be selling them, individuals will.

Wander round the paddock at any club racing meet and you'll be spoiled for choice. Folk usually just stack them up in their pit with a sign attached.

Check out places like the VD Club Racing section, motoforum.net (post a wanted if there's nothing being offered).

Ask in the Racing section here - quite a few club racers on BCF will have tyres they want to shift.

Might find some at trackdays, but it's less common in my experience.

Interesting G. Last couple of race events I remember lots of tyres for sale but never really looked too much at the condition and prices. Mainly do my riding in better, dry weather conditions anyways and quite happy if for £20-40 I get a set of tyres that will do a few thousand miles on them. Thumbs Up

As I mentioned, wouldn't expect a few thousand. However, even if you only get 1000 miles, it'll still end up cheaper than a lot of new tyres anyway.

one thing to watch for is that they are so soft, that i think they can easily pick up sharp stuff like shards of glass that can work their way into the tyre and give you a slow puncture

i think thats what happened with my last rear tyre as there is broken glass in the alley where i park my bike sometimes

the road tyre i have now doesnt pick up stuff as its much harder

For me aswell as the softness, the profile of the race scrub was really good, as the bike seemed to fall into corners much more easily.

Imagine a profile like a square resting on a point rather than a square resting on a flat edge, and you get the idea of what i mean.

race scrubs warm up sufficently for a ride of a tank or two, but they dont really warm up on a 10mile commute in winter

I got a set for my ninja about a week ago Colin.

Dunlop Sportmax GP Racer M (whatever that means). I paid over the odds for a set of scrubs but I didn't really care. All I wanted was a set of legal, matching tyres on my ninja before I advertised it.

It just so happens that I really like the tyres. Thumbs Up They 'feel' quite good once warmed up. Dodgy in the rain but what do you expect really. I don't ride hard in the rain so it isn't a problem.
