If I was getting a sports 50 I would go for an Aprilia RS50 instead- looks alot nicer and its a better known make. Could still be unreliable though.

Why not just get a scoot?

theres also that Gilera DNA50 if you want bike-looks. Its automatic as well.

i think this is alot nicer than the rs50
and i've heard this bike is very reliable but the thing is i've never seen any second hand so i would have to go all out with my money on this.

it does look like a 125, which is nice, also it will get you used to geared bikes and squeezing every last bit out of your bike.

you think? i've been saying that to myself about learning gears.
But i still haven't been able to find any second hand and their £2199 brand new.
I did used to like the rs50's but their too common. I want something different. I saw a pic of the rx50 i i just decided thats what i wanted.

I'd reccomend something like the dt50 (unless you're *really* short)
You can get them for not much at all... okay the styling's not quite up to the modern sports one's. But the performance will be moderaltey close and you can get them damn cheap which means it won't amtter if you stack it.

sorry.. I've never really looked at 50s much ... as far as I know the performance is all pretty similar.. if it's looks then it's up to you.

IF she gets a 50 (of whatever type) hopefully she can get 1year NCB which will moake insurance at 17 a bit more pallatable.

AFAIK The Gilera DNA is the best selling sub125 on the market. IT's also the one of cheapest 50cc "Bikes" to insure. For the cost of the RX50 you could get the DNA50 with CBT, kit (helmet etc) and insurance. I think most places throw it all in now. And gears don't really matter. You would get used to them whenever.
Your 1st bike should be a little more practical than posing. Hence most going for NSR125's instead of the RS125's.
Plus the years NCB will REALLY help at 17. You could go straight for a restricted 400 Twisted Evil

and just to add, the DNA's are REALLY small (a guy round my area has one) could be perfect for a young girl to ride.

Potentially unreliable european built bikes aren't your only choice. Have a look around the web and in bikemart style magazines for unofficially imported jap 50's. NSR50, TZR50, GSXR50 etc. to give you an idea of what to look for. They are all very hard to come by. Alternatively have a look at some classic sports mopeds, Yamaha FS1Es being the obvious choice for many but there are others such as Suzuki AP50 and my own first bike, the Garelli Tiger cross. All have 4 to 6 gears and anything from 5 to 8 horsepower. But being 30 years old they come with their own shortfalls. The Garelli for example had shit electrics and vibrated like a fucker but did 55mph on the flat once the gearing had been dropped a tooth on the front sproket. It would get above 60 down a steep enough hill!
