PostPosted: 22:54 - 14 May 2007    Post subject: Fork Springs Questions Reply with quote

I am wondering about upgrading my front forks on my 2003 R6 - just fitting some better springs really.

It doesn't seem like an expensive mod but how much really would it help. Would it really be worth it??

Anyone on here had some upgrades fitted? What did you think?

Or, would it be better just to get my standard suspension set up properly for my weight - which is about 15 Stone!!!

any help please Mr. Green

the standard springs are ok in the r6 but you have a few optionsif you are unhappy with them,
1 get straight rate springs for your weight and riding style,
2 get progressive springs
3 put a heavier grade oil into your forks

i would just change the oil first and see how that goes, if its still not hard enough then change the springs.

What about putting some shins in to tighten up the springs and as said
play with different grade oil.Higher grade.I think it goes up to 30 and it is
usually 15 so you have a bit to play with.

Paddy.

If you aren't having any problems with them bottoming out etc. then you may create more problems than you solve by putting in thick oil. Bear in mind it'll slow down both compression and rebound.

If it was me I would take it to someone that knows suspension. Most bike tuning places should be able to help...

K-Tech
Maxton
BSD Developements
Hagon

Are all people that should be able to help if they are local.

Ohlins, Hyperpro and White Power (WP) may be worth a try.

K-tech make be able to get you decent settings with just new oil and a re-valve, so you'll be saving the money as you won't need different springs.

Remeber if you do go ahead with this, getting your forks only done will highlight how crap your shock is, so may be worth wating another month, saving and doing both at the same time.

You could always mess with the air gap and spring preload. Costs nothing*.

Adjust preload by adding shims on top of the springs. 2p pieces are traditional**. You can also make new spacers out of blue alkathene water pipe, start long and cut them back by degrees until it feels right.

*Not literally true, vide infra
**May cost several pennies.

I just had my fork seals replaced on monday, on my NSR. As i had noticed a slight smear of oil on the left fork. But now they a bottoming out worse than before. The mechanic said that on 125's they usually use a grade 10 oil, so he had put 15 grade in. So now i am thinking of taking it to be re-done, but with my own oil.
Can anyone reccomend what grade to use, i too am about 15 stone. I know it's quite a small bike for my size, but it is my only option til i save enough for the Gixxer, or R6 that i want.
The springs are fine i think. Cos before i had the seals done, the bottoming out problem was not as bad as it is now.
