Recently I had to replace the battery on my CBR600FR 'cos the old one had died.

On Saturday I took the bike for its MOT (passed with rear tyre advisory) and on the way home I was blasting along a dual carriageway when the engine lost power. I freewheeled to the hard shoulder and realised the engine was still running but very rough (2 or 3 cylinders). I tried revving it but every time I opened the throttle the engine slowed and backfired. The neutral light was flickering in time with the engine. Then the engine cut out and all the lights went out.

I phoned Avenger to come and collect me in the car so I could whip the battery out of her Monster so I could use it to get the CBR home.

So what problem did I find? Cool

It sounds like the battery terminal may have been loose, and it was trying to run from the alternator (most bikes and cars don't appreciate this happening.)

You win the prize, sir! I thought I had the reknowned Honda Reg/Rec problem but in actual fact I hadn't tightened the positive terminal properly when replacing the battery. Relief and embarrassment all in one package. Embarassed Laughing

You were lucky no serious damage done to rectifier and alternator.
Or rather you might be unlucky and find you have done some damage.
