Hi all, just wondering if anyone can voach for/recommend a good bullet cam setup that doesnt break the bank.

I dont own a video cam (digital or tape) so i really want some kind of cheab shockproof hard drive and a helmet cam that doesnt require 18 layers of bubblewrap to get a clear signal. Im looking to mount it low left fairing panel, maybe get a spare inspection panel off ebay and modify it.

Anyone got any good ideas? Know any deals online?

For a decent shock-proof system that doesn't have the mess of wires, I'm looking at a 'chasecam' setup. However cheapest you can get them in the UK seems to be £385 or so.

There are quite a few recorders that will do 640x480 @ 30fps, from about £100; however the wiring in a 'traditional' setup tends to be a bit of a ball-ache.

The chasecam has an on-board microphone and powers the camera from it's unit, so only requires one lead.

I was going to go for one of those setups too, but the price was just too high for me.
As such, I went about setting up a bullet cam and recorder powered from my bike battery. I documented the whole process (with pics) HERE. As yet though I still haven't put any of my videos on the web.

One thing I learned (the hard way) is that if you want the recorder in your bike, make it SOLID STATE. A hdd recorder just cannot cope with the vibration.

Edit:
I found quite a good video review by the developer of the chasecam recorder here.

Ive been looking at the oregon scientific ATC2000 which is an all in one jobby which records straight to a 2Gb SD card (about an hour on max quality).

Its not fantastic quality, certianly fine for posting on uTube etc but nothing compared to a proper video camera and bullet lens. However the camera is £89 to £100 depending on where, and you can get a quality sucker mount for it for around £11, ive been looking on www.fastfilms.co.uk, posted on their forum to ask if people think it is a good first time setup, so keep an eye on that?

Here's an example of a video with the ATC200 mounted on the crash bars of my ER5

Good for the price and very convenient - but the wind noise down the mic is terrible!

That's a problem you're going to get with any setup - either horrific wind or engine noise depending on where you put the mic! My mic is just behind the plastic fairing separating the two seat covers, and it's nothing but engine + 'zorst.

I was thinking of figuring out where the mic was and sticking foam in it?

Either that or mounting the bullet cam flush behind some other plastic, or in the helmet... Thinking

I cut up a sponge and embedded the mic in that, then put it in a plastic bag to protect it from moisture as the membrane was exposed and once it's wet the mic is wrecked. As far as wind noise goes I didn't really get any before, but it hasn't helped very much with the vibration! Of course, that's just my bike and mic setup, yours may work perfectly. (And if it does, please tell me so I can change mine!)

I was most unimpressed with the ATC 2000. In the above vid you can see how the image wobbles a bit. This seem to be a bit variable; mine seems to have it quite bad, even not going very fast.
For the same price, though it's harder to attach and not waterproof, I'd reccomend a digilife 'camcorder' style one. These actually weigh about the same as the ATC with better quality. Some designs also have an AV in, so can be used with a bullet cam as well.
The lens/CCD isn't great, especially in low light. However in ok light seems to work ok.

Get it working with a decent bullet cam and it should be good, but I find all the wires etc too much hassle - and don't have easy underseat storage on race bikes Sad.

Some dark vids here:

Have got a good clip of me paragliding (bit better light), but can't find it at the mo)
