My girlfriends grandad died a few weeks ago, and her family have been working to get all his possessions sorted. As such my GF has suddenly inherited about 150 records, some really obscure.

I think it's worth researching them all in case there are a few really rare ones, and I'm sure there are, but I don't really know how to value them, even something like David Cassidy - The Higher They Climb - brought up nothing on eBay.

Are there any decent resources?

Cheers

At the end of the day it one of the few good things about Ebay, you don't need to know how much its worth, there's enough people out there who do.

Yeah but we've got to weigh the value of some of them against the inconvenience of selling them. It now appears there's about 250, including some Beatles which could be worth a small fortune, so thanks for the help. Thumbs Up Karma Besides any valuable ones, I'll stick them on eBay in 50 disc lots.

Just because they are old though doesn't mean they are worth anything, a lot depends on the label & colour of vinyl etc. Beatles stuff was produced in its thousands.

Take them to a record collector who will give you a valuation, or to a shop that specialises in buying & selling old vinyl before you rush to stick them on ebay.

Try contacting Diverse Vinyl in Newport. They mostly deal with brand new LPs but will probably have a good idea of things that are collectable/valuable.

The guys in there are all hugely passionate about vinyl and may be something of a target audience for some of the records already.

BTW, I have a soft spot for records too. A comprehensive list of what you have would be useful - including their condition. In some cases it's the album cover itself that's the desirable bit (Yes albums, some foreign recordings etc).

I'm into vinyl.

What era are these records from?

Popsyke is good. It's valued my Now 35 double vinyl at around £105. I paid £65 for it. It was the last vinyl now album so is highly collectable.

Try and search for part of the album name as well.

Also you need to check things like colour of the record label and if it's in stereo or mono. It is tedious but i'm sure with 150 records you will have some collectable ones.

I'd search for the oldest ones first.

Condition is also important. I have a first press copy of Paranoid by Black Sabbath...

It appears to have seen a few parties in its day and is worth about a quid.

I hear LPs are very good for throwing at people you dislike, melting into ashtrays and great as stress relievers to snap in half. Wink
