TZR250 Electrical Problem Crying or Very sad
What I know so far.
I charged the battery and went out for a short ride on the bike. By the end of the ride the electrics were on the blink. Pathetic horn, indicators not working etc etc. The bike ran well mind.
Now:
No lights come on when the ignition is switched on, not even the neutral light. Obviously a flat battery which I have confirmed(9v measured) and its now on charge. To add to the fun I didn’t exactly maintain it over the winter.
The bike starts no problem but the lights are dim, indicators don’t flash etc.
I have measured the voltage across the battery, when running at 5000rpm, at 9V this goes to 12v when I switch the lights on! All out of spec it’s supposed to be 14.3-15.3v
The bike runs without battery! Measured voltage between red and black wire still low without a battery in place.
So it would seem it’s a charging problem but the bike runs fine!
I have tried to measure the resistance across the stator coils but I don’t understand the multi-meter or manual instructions. It says set the meter to the ohms x1 position, my multi-meter just has settings 200,2K,20K up to 20M. No idea how this compares. The only setting I get any kind of reading on is 200. This gives a reading of 0.9 across the coil and 0.3 with the probes touched together (zero). The spec is 0.44-0.66 ohms. If I subtract my zero from the measured across the coil it would seem it is in spec. Any other meter setting gives a zero reading.
Anyway the good book says the next step is to check the entire charging system for connections and if this is ok then change the rectifier.

Does anyone have any thoughts? I am utterly out of my depth at the moment.
Specifically:
What do the resistance settings on my multi-meter mean?
Am I right in assuming that if there is a charging system connection problem I wouldn’t get any voltage readings at the battery connections?
Also am I right that, if the stator coils are knacked the bike wouldn’t run properly.
Is there anything else I can check?

Cheers to anyone who can help.

It is likely that there are three wires coming from the stator coils.
Check if they all have the same output.
If not I would say that is the problem.

Paddy.

Yes there are 3. Not sure how I am going to check with the engine running but I will give it a shot. Cheers.

I have some wires with clips on the end so as to join the wires when
the block connector is disconnected.
That way I can check one at a time.
It should last long enough on the battery for you to find out if you
charge the battery.

Paddy.
