:roll:hay there! Just been reading about roundabouts and your corrrrrect they are pretty mindboggling. I personnaly don't have a fear of them but i've had time to adjust not because i've experienced a lot of roundabouts but as i have an automatic scooter, Twisted Evil so this enables me to give more observation to other drivers. If there is one thing that p****s me off it is the lack of signalling by other motorists. If a motorcyclists gets a bump it is a pretty raw deal.

Question: If you are on a major road and there is a juntion on the right, ahead of you, taking drivers off a minor road onto your major road and a car in front of me has indicated right slowed down and stopped on the right of her left lane to turn into the minor road, can i overtake her ie not changing lanes but going around her left side on the left of our lane?

I might not be the best person to ask so don't take this as gospell but I think so yeah, provided you can see down the road on the right and it is clear as well as any road it may be cutting across and obviously if the road ahead is clear.

Could be classified as undertaking, I wouldn't do it in front of a police car, but as long as you've checked the left mirror that there's nothing coming up behind you on the left it's fine.

I would pass on the left if there is enough room to do it safely - why wouldn't you?

It isn't undertaking - the car is waiting to turn right, so if there is room to pass the left side of the car then go for it Thumbs Up

Highway code, rule 139:

Quote:

139: Overtake only when it is safe to do so. You should

  • not get too close to the vehicle you intend to overtake
  • use your mirrors, signal when it is safe to do so, take a quick sideways glance into the blind spot area and then start to move out
  • not assume that you can simply follow a vehicle ahead which is overtaking; there may only be enough room for one vehicle
move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking, once you have started to overtake. Allow plenty of room. Move back to the left as soon as you can but do not cut in
  • take extra care at night and in poor visibility when it is harder to judge speed and distance
give way to oncoming vehicles before passing parked vehicles or other obstructions on your side of the road
  • only overtake on the left if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right, and there is room to do so
  • stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues. If the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left
  • give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would a car when overtaking (see Rules 188, 189 and 191.

Remember: Mirrors - Signal - Manoeuvre

Do not cut in too quickly

Stinkwheel is obviously completely correct, although I do abuse this rule and as soon as I see the right indicators go on I undertake straight away...

Make sure you observe their road positioning before commiting to your move, usually the road positioning will tell you more than their indication ever will.

Ride safe

As said watch road position and be careful. Some cars drivers indicate right but will swing/move left first in order to make the turn. Obviously big trucks/artics will need extra room as well, i.e. don't undertake unless really sure.

Yep forgot to add watch for them swinging left and leave plenty of room, I don't bother undertaking buses or artics as I find them unpredictable when turning,
