Well I can offer an opinion on the SV as I had one as my first bike after passing my test.

Good beginner bike, V-twin with a fair bit of torque, spread nicely through the range. Will happily carry you to speeds beyond which your head would fall off as there's no fairing.

Suspension is a bit crap, though, when cornering.

Don't stand up particularly well to being run over by lorries, either.

Fazer has a detuned sports-bike engine and I think the power band is higher on it than the SV - you run out of power at about 9000 rpm on the SV, but there's plenty from 2k upwards so it's much easier to ride around town etc. Having said that, my Ninja has a peak power at 12k and is still easy to ride around town, so don't get hung up on the idea of avoiding a 'revvier' bike.

Good all-rounder and easy bike to learn on.
